Tony Jeffery has joined the TLSN Board of Directors and plans to captain a team at the TLSN Legacy Golf Tournament, provided he’s fully recovered from his hemorrhagic stroke by mid-October 2026. He recently wrapped up a Longhorn podcast to preserve for posterity and is making great progress in his recovery. He was also honored as a special guest of TLSN at the Houston Touchdown Club event, where Coach Sark discussed the 2026 Longhorn football team.

Tony took part in eight Bowl games, both as a player and as a coach. His prominent pupils at Texas were Quan Cosby, Aaron Ross, Hunter Lawrence, Jordan Shipley, and Limas Sweed. He was on the Rose Bowl team that beat Michigan 38-37

Coach Bob Shipley

In the podcast Coach Shipley shares stories of his father, who played at SMU, and his uncle, a world-class track coach. He discusses his own athletic career at Abilene Christian, where he overcame a misdiagnosed ACL injury to become an All-American in track (shot put).

The Coaching Journey: A chronological look at Shipley’s career, starting as an assistant at Graham and Temple (under Bob McQueen) before taking head coaching roles at Rotan, Burnet, Coppell, and Brownwood. He reflects on the "special groups" of kids he coached, including future NFL players like Stephen McGee.

The University of Texas Years: Shipley details his transition to the collegiate level, serving as one of UT's first football analysts under Mack Brown. He later returned as the Director of High School Relations under Tom Herman, acting as the vital liaison between the university and high school coaches across the state.

Lessons from Mack Brown:

Shipley highlights the enduring character of Mack Brown, noting how the coach supported the Shipley family during son Jordan’s serious accident and even encouraged Bob to start a Twitter account for coach mentorship (which now has over 20,000 followers).

So said Billy Shakespeare's Juliet to Romeo. But, Julie Baby, many of us would disagree. I mean, would the Rose Bowl be nearly as cool if it were the old Poulan Weedeater Independence Bowl ?

If a name doesn't matter, why did Marion Morrison become John Wayne? Why is Reginald Dwight better known as Elton John? A girl named Norma Jean got a lot more mileage out of Marilyn, i'm pretty sure.

And Mark Twain is catchier than Samuel Clemens.

This in mind, I started thinking about the cool names I read about as a kid, checking on bygone Longhorn football days. A menagerie of names such as Ox Emerson, Pig Dittmar and Rooster Andrews are out there in Bevo's barnyard corral.

I thought I'd comb my brain and the dusty rosters from the DKR era onward. Naturally, "what's in a name" is pretty subjective. Feel free to add your own favorites to this list.

So sit back, relax and brush up on the rules learned from Shirley Ellis's memorable "The Name Game."

Title IX Longhorn women student-athletes' leaders from 1972-1979 set the winning cultural foundation for Longhorn Women's Collegiate Sports dominance today.

For Love of the Game

Unfortunately, TLSN has not been able to find any volleyball team photos from the pivotal years of 1972 and 1973 that set the stage for over 50 years of winning volleyball. Cactus missed capturing this key moment in women’s journey to the AIAW and, eventually, their integration into the NCAA network.

With the arrival of Title IX in the 1970s, women at U.T. learned to sail their ships and navigate rough waters.
These Longhorn women athletes combined strong character, resolve, work ethic, and determination to lay the cornerstone for success for Title IX teams from the 1980s to the present.

In 1972 and 1973, operating with a team travel budget of only $400 for overnight road trips to Louisiana and across Texas to represent the Longhorns was not a 5-star enjoyable experience like many of the men's sports travel experiences. All expenses over the $400 budget were paid by the coaches and athletes. The teams traveled in two cars, slept on beds and floors in two motel rooms, and competed in uniforms sewn by Mary Santamaria from mismatched polyester and heavy double-knit fabric.

Despite restraints, constraints, and a limited budget, their impact on Longhorn sports history is legendary.
Coach Conradt, who led Texas volleyball and basketball teams in the late 1970s, fondly recalls the humble beginnings of women's Title IX adventure to the future. At a media event, she reflected on the incredible growth in women's sports. With a smile, she noted, "There are 11 media representatives here today! Back when I started, if we had this many fans in the stands, it meant someone’s family was in town. "

Carolyn Frost Keenan (no photo) was one of the first Longhorn captains of her ship, referenced by Louisa May Alcott in the photo above. She played on the volleyball teams in 1972 and 1973, and together with her teammates, built a culture of sports discipline that fueled the program’s success for over 50 years. Despite limited budgets and a fan base slow to embrace women’s sports at Texas, the female Longhorn athletes of the 1970s persevered.

I asked Carolyn how she managed to stay motivated in such a tough, obstacle-filled, and adversarial environment. Her answer was both insightful and revealing.

In all adventures in sports the journey begins with pioneers who play for love of the game. Carolyn was a pioneer. Her answer reflects the heartbeat of all sports: athletes overcome all obstacles to play the sport they love and the fans see this passion and follow. Look no further than the world soccer events in the USA right now to see athletes love of the game energizing fans love of the game.

For Carolyn, her teammates, and many others at Texas in 1972 and 1973 who helped kick off Title IX before scholarships and national attention were in the mix, sports were all about pure passion—the energy, heart, and thrill that pushed athletes onto the field, court, or track to give everything for their team and nothing else.

1978 — Title IX Full compliance deadline.

By 1978, colleges and high schools were fully compliant with Title IX.

This is the year when the effects are clear in rosters, scholarships, and competitive schedules.
