Tons of team and individual marks appear to be untouchable, for many reasons.

Søren Hess‑Olesen finishing the season as the No. 1 singles player in the nation is the cleanest, most airtight “will never be broken” individual record in Texas men’s tennis history. It’s a perfect storm of era, format, and program identity that simply won’t align again.

Leigh Ann Fetter is one of the most dominant sprinters in NCAA history. Her record haul spans multiple categories that no other UT woman matches including a 15× NCAA Champion — the most by any Texas woman swimmer. 4× NCAA Champion in the 50‑yard freestyle — the first woman in NCAA history to win the same event four straight years. First woman ever under 22 seconds in the 50‑yard freestyle.

Ben Crenshaw holds the most significant and enduring individual records in Texas Longhorn men’s golf, and by a wide margin. His dominance shows up in national titles, conference titles, and career impact.

The swim team finishes 2nd again to SMU. The Horns are the Avis of the SWC. They try harder but still finish 2nd. Times are about to change .

The Horns set 11 school records and 5 SWC records and manage to win 10 of 18 events at the SWC championship meet.

In 1972 the Horns lose to SMU by 376 points in 1973 they lost by 119 points.

1973-1974- Coach Pat Patterson 2nd in the SWC

A U.T. administrative indifference to the swim team in 1974 upset Coach Patterson. Patterson fights the administration for swimming scholarships and salary for his assistance and chooses to miss the only road trip for the year.

Bob Rachner – The photo is Bob Rachner, the only Longhorn who placed first at the SWC championships. The team men qualified 7 swimmers and one diver. Tim Carter, Ralph Watson, Ron Tyre, diver Bill Hobbs, Fred LeMaistre Jaime Baotf , Dick Worrel and Rachner. Unfortunately, no points were scored at the NCAA meet.

1974-1975- Coach Pat Patterson “Mo” begins to work for the horns.

Longhorn ‘Psyche’ Breaks SMU’s Hold on the SWC .

Horns break SMU’s dual meet 19 year record beating the Horns . The score is Texas 63 and SMU 50. 12 of 13 Longhorn school records fall this year. Dick Worrel, Jamie Baird, Ron Tyre, Bob Rachner, Tim Carter, and Ralph Watson lead the team . Patterson says that great swimmers are starting to put Texas in the same league with USC and Alabama but the Athletic Council continues to reject Patterson request for 19 instead of 14 scholarships.

Horns broke 12 of 13 school records this year.

1975-1976- Coach Pat Patterson

Patterson wonders why the Athletic Council built a $6,000,000 swimming facility and then says that due to budget restraints will not allow the swim team the maximum number of swimming scholarships . The NCAA allows 19 swimming scholarships and the Horns only offer 14.

Texas finishes 2nd to SMU. It is the 20th consecutive time that SMU is SWC champion. Even though this team was considered the best ever at this point in Longhorn history only 3 swimmers scored at nationals. The Horns finished 20th at nationals.

Guy Hagstette sets two SWC swimming records and the relay team took 9 seconds off the SWC record in the 440 I.M. He is high point man at the SWC meets.

Brent Barker, Darrell Fick, Jeff Krumweide are All Americans. Darrell Fick took 9 seconds of the old SWC record in the individual 440 individual medley.

The new pool opens and is the high-tech wonder of the United States.

Ken Armstrong enrolled at the University of Texas after competing for Canada in the 1976 Olympics. He began his coaching career after two successful seasons with the Longhorns and another Olympic team selection in 1980. Armstrong was selected as head coach for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, where Woodland’s diver and TSDHOF inductee Laura Wilkinson won the Olympic gold medal in the women’s 10-meter platform event. This was the first Olympic diving gold medal for a U.S. woman in that event since 1964. He has been a member of every U.S. Olympic coaching staff since 2000.

Below is a letter written by Tex Robertson complimenting Bill Robertson. The letter captures the internal conflict and decision-making process required to hire Coach Reese for Men’s swimming and Paul Bergen for Women’s swimming. I separated the letter below into two parts so the font is more significant. If you don’t want to read the letter, I have written the bullet points of the letter below:

Frank Erwin, in 1969, said there would be no new swimming center unless Texas won the SWC or hired a new coach.

SMU had won the SWC 15 times in a row, and Frank Erwin wanted to change those results.

Pat Patterson is the answer for the coaching change.

In 1973, Betty Thompson, the women’s sports administrator, asked Pat Patterson if he would also coach the Women’s swim team.

While Coach Patterson beat SMU in a dual meet, he never beat SMU for the SWC championship. However, there is no question that Coach Patterson’s formula for success is a winner, and the team improved dramatically during his years as head swim coach. Coach Patterson laid the foundation to fulfill Frank Erwin’s demand for a winner before a new swimming center was built.

Coach Patterson resigned in 1978 on excellent terms with UT and was instrumental in hiring Coach Reese and Coach Paul Bergen.

Coach Patterson’s coaching choices resulted in the National Championships for the men’s and women’s swimming teams four years later, in 1981.

William Bonham- Longhorn

Athlete, Lawyer, and Builder of Institutions.

Known to the rest of the world simply as “Bill,” William Donald Bonham passed peacefully in his sleep on January 3, 2026, with his head resting on a Longhorn pillowcase, surrounded by the love of family and friends.

His gift for tennis emerged at the University of Texas, where he was affectionately nicknamed “Bird Legs Bonham.” After an early baseball injury during his freshman year, he earned a place on the Texas tennis team and loved the University so much that he enrolled in law school to use up his remaining years of tennis eligibility. A three-year letterman at Texas, Bill was undefeated in singles and doubles in Southwest Conference competitions. He was an active member of Delta Tau Delta, the Silver Spurs, and the Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity, and he was honored as Outstanding Intramural Athlete of the Year in both 1953 and 1954 while in law school.

In the late 1960s, Bill hired two young law students, Wayne Fox and Ed Carrington, who became his associates, then partners, and ultimately co-founders of the highly successful firm Bonham, Carrington & Fox, which opened its doors in 1971. By the 1980s, the firm had grown to nearly 50 lawyers in One Shell Plaza. Decades later, his fourth “favorite” daughter followed in his footsteps as a Houston litigator and, shortly before his passing, was named Office Managing Partner of her firm, continuing the legacy he began.

Bill’s fierce competitiveness and love of tennis stayed with him throughout his life. By the mid-1960s and continuing well into his 80s, he captured numerous Texas age-group state championships. He also won national titles, earned international rankings after competing in enough qualifying events, and represented the United States in the Osuna Cup against Mexico for many years. He was a founding member and frequent champion of the Houston Racquet Club, a place he cherished and where he practiced, competed, and spent treasured time with family and friends.

David Wood Jefferies, 81, of Abilene, passed away on January 8, 2026 after a brief illness.

David was born in Abilene, TX, to Sissy & D.H. “Red” Jefferies, Jr., on October 15, 1944. David shared his birthday with his sister Peggy, who was two years older. He attended Fair Park Elementary, Lincoln Jr. High and Abilene High School. During high school, David excelled in both pole vaulting and on the football field. In the spring of 1962, David became the first person to clear 14’ 0” at the state meet clearing 14, 1.5” and winning the state championship. Following graduation in 1963, David furthered his athletic and academic career at the University of Texas where he was a 3-year letterman on the football team and studied business. He was a proud member of both Phi Gamma Delta and the Silver Spurs organization while in school.

Outside of short stints in Hereford, TX, and Fort Morgan, CO, David lived in Abilene, but his true home was always in Jones County. For most of his career, David was involved in various aspects of the cattle and oil business. He was a life-long member of First Baptist Church.

Dave Jefferies was a linebacker on the 1966 Texas Longhorns football team.

He was part of a team that included Fred Edwards, Chris Gilbert, Bill Bradley Joel Brame, Dick Kimbrough, and Mike Perrin — a transitional defensive era just before the 1968–70 defensive dominance under Royal.

Jefferies was not a headline starter, but he was a rostered linebacker contributing to depth and special teams — the backbone roles that kept Royal’s teams competitive during the mid‑60s.

Falk’s enduring self-confidence drove him to success in baseball, football, and coaching.

Few coaching transitions were as stark a contrast as the one from Billy Disch to Bibb Falk. Billy was polished and refined, while Bibb was bold and brash. Billy never cursed, but Bibb knew every swear word in the American lexicon. He could cuss all day without offending anyone. As noted in *Texas Longhorn Baseball* by Wilbur Evans and Bill Little, “Part of the Falk legend is of a crusty old fellow who could curse for an hour without repeating himself.” But Falks Coaching style worked! In 1939 Coach Falk’s team went undefeated in the SWC for the first time in 20 years.

Coach Falk was known for his colorful coaching style and blunt, unpolished philosophy, famously summed up in his quip: “You cannot make chicken salad out of chicken shit!” History says the Longhorns tossed a lot of chicken salad.

Jim Ehrler gets the victory in the championship game. Jim and Charles Goren yielded only five runs in 27 innings. Tom Hamilton becomes the first recipient of the series’s most outstanding player, hitting three home runs. It was the first year that the award was presented.

Frank Womack was also a hero for the Horns. Six times he opened up the inning with a hit, and he scored four of those times. Texas beats the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1

Frank Womack participates in three championship seasons. He is All -SWC in baseball and the Captain of the basketball team in 1951 Bibb Falk predicts that in 1950, the Longhorns will be back playing for the National Championship. Pitching was the key with Murray Wall, Charlie Gorin, and Jim Ehrler. Jim Ehrler was the leader in batting and fielding.

He went on to build a 30-year career as an elevator mechanic, a title he wore proudly, and became known across the industry for his strong work ethic, dependability, and genuine kindness. On March 16, 1996, Gerrald married his college sweetheart, Michelle, and together they shared 29 years of love, partnership, and treasured memories while raising their three children- Kayla, Anthony, and Phillip. In 2009, Gerrald and his family planted new roots in McKinney, Texas and built a life filled with close friendships and a strong circle of family, friends, and coworkers.

Gerrald was the kind of person who never met a stranger. His smile was welcoming, his humor uplifting, and his stories legendary- always told with animation, laughter, and a sparkle in his eye. He loved to entertain, gather people together, and make others feel like family. Whether cooking a meal for others, telling tales that made everyone laugh until they cried, or simply showing up when someone needed him, Gerrald brought joy into every room he walked into.
Gerrald is survived by his wife, Michelle Houston; children, Kayla Houston, Gerrald Anthony Houston II, and Phillip Houston; siblings, James Houston Jr. (Britta Houston), LaTarsha Martin (Robert N. Martin), Adrian Houston, Darryl Houston (Tina Houston), and Sonja Allen (Byron Allen); and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, James Sr. and Brenda Houston.
Let the way Gerrald lived inspire us to love deeply, give freely, laugh often, and show up for others just as he did.

There are souls who arrive in this world already carrying light, and when they leave, that light does not disappear—it simply changes form. James T. Harris was one of those souls. He passed from this life on December 25, 2025, surrounded by love, at the age of 64—gone far too soon, yet having given more love in his lifetime than many give in a century.

James was a man who loved deeply, sincerely, and without reservation. He was the most devoted and adoring husband to his wife, Maricela, and the most loyal, proud, and loving father to his sons, Jake (wife Victoria) and Matthew (fiancée Maddy). His family was his greatest joy and his proudest accomplishment. He spoke of them constantly, his love for them woven into every conversation, every smile, and every plan for the future. James was the cornerstone of his family, their steady presence, their safe place, their home.

He is reunited in eternal peace with his cherished parents, Charles (Poppie) and LaVan (Vanna) Harris of Austin, TX, his grandparents, David and Rubye Roe of Teague, TX, and J.T. and Gladys Harris of Andrews, TX, and many other loved ones who went before him.

James was a great guy and will really be missed. When I was a freshman at UT, he was a senior and he became a mentor and friend, and was always incredibly kind and helpful to me. I’m glad to see he lived such a good life and I’m so sorry for your loss.

He is survived by his wife, Maricela of Austin, TX; their sons, Jake (wife Victoria) of Round Rock, TX, and Matthew (fiancée Maddy) of Liberty Hill, TX; and his brother, Chuck (wife Carrie) of Palestine, TX. He is also survived by his sister, Susan of Pflugerville, TX; his nephews, Kyle of Palestine, TX, and J.D. (wife Amber) of Austin, TX; his niece, Marisha Alford of Medina, TX and two great-nephews, Jaylen and Eric Alford of Medina, TX; and many cousins, extended family members, and countless friends whose lives were forever changed by his presence.

James was a teacher, a mentor, and a gifted healer who knew early in life that physical therapy was his calling. In 2004, he co-founded Austin Manual Therapy Associates, fulfilling a lifelong dream of owning his own clinic. Even more meaningful was seeing another dream realized—working alongside his family in the clinic he loved so dearly. To James, physical therapy was never just a profession; it was a healing art. His patients often spoke of the power of his healing touch and the deeply compassionate care he brought to each session. Healing, through James, extended beyond the body and mind and reached the heart with intuitive grace.

James Harris was a Texas Longhorns baseball player, and he played a meaningful role on two of the most iconic teams in program history. He pitched for Texas in the mid‑1980s and was part of the 1983 National Championship team.

– Listed on the 1983 Texas Longhorns roster as Pitcher #17.

– Teammates included Roger Clemens, Calvin Schiraldi, Bruce Ruffin, Mike Capel, and Billy Bates — one of the most talent‑dense rosters in UT history.

– Harris was a member of the 1983 College World Series Championship team, which defeated Alabama in the title game.

– This team is widely considered one of the greatest in Texas baseball history.

– Born in 1961, he passed away in 2025 at age 64.

James was also known for giving the very best and endearing hugs—because they came straight from the heart. He was attentive, kind, and intentional in caring for others. He was also unapologetically himself, endearingly human in his habits—locking the car three times, being intentionally verbose or loquacious, and rotating through favorite snack indulgences. Every beautiful strength and every small peculiarity made him who he was, and made him all the more beloved.

My deepest sympathies to Maricela and the boys. I got to spend some time with James when I needed some physical therapy. He was so easy to talk to and helped me feel comfortable being there. He always had a smile on his face and always said hello. And of course we loved to talk U.T. I would have rather just hang out than do my exercises. His kindness was truly genuine. One of the greatest sorrows of losing James is losing the very person who would be doing everything in his power to comfort everyone else through this loss. An enduring light has left this world, but in its place remains a legacy of love, belief, healing, and connection that will ripple through generations. His impact cannot be measured, only felt.

To know James was to witness grace in action. He moved through the world with a heart of gold and a rare, intuitive warmth, making everyone he met feel profoundly seen and deeply loved. His presence left an indelible mark on our souls, rooted in a spiritual compassion that turned ordinary moments into sacred reminders of our own worth. Those fortunate enough to know him would tell you there was no one who believed in them more; even when someone could not believe in themselves, James believed enough for both. Through his infectious humor and his ability to find light in any shadow, he lived with a generous spirit that mended hearts as much as minds. James leaves behind a legacy of unwavering belief and a warmth that continues to guide all who were touched by his light.

As we gather to remember James, we do not say goodbye—we say thank you. Thank you for the love you gave so freely, the faith you had in all of us, and the way you taught us to heal, to believe, and to love more fully.

“Do not pity the dead. Pity the living, and, above all, those who live without love.”

There is no one who lived with more love than James Harris. His spirit endures, his love remains, and his light will continue to guide us until we meet again.

I was 16 when I first met James.

He was my mentor during my physical therapy clinical internship in high school, and it was through my experience with James that my calling to become a physical therapist was formed.

I grew up in a small town in Texas—Smithville. One of our best running backs, a college hopeful, was hit by a drunk driver one night, requiring 14 surgeries on one leg and 12 on the other. Doctors told him he would never walk again.

I watched James meet him exactly where he was. He didn’t just treat injuries—he had deep compassion for the loss my friend was facing: the loss of the sport he loved, the loss of a lifelong dream, and the mental anguish that followed. Session by session, James worked through this with him, motivating him daily with steps that may have seemed small, but always moved him forward.

Eventually, James got approval to bring his personal Olympic lifting station into the clinic. We set it up and began lifting weights, which brought immense joy back into this former football player’s life.

Then something magical happened.

What started as electrical stimulation, leg lifts, and curls turned into standing… then squatting.

Then came the miracle.

One day, when the former football player least expected it, James said,

“I think today we’ll walk.”

I will never forget that day. With tears in his eyes—and in James’ and mine—I watched him stand and walk. He had been told he never would, and at times he believed it. But over time, James wore down doubt until belief was the only option left.

Years later, I was eating at a local barbecue place when a big guy walked toward me with tears in his eyes. It was him. He shared that he owned his own house-painting company, climbed ladders, worked on roofs, and even ran with his kids.

James changed both of our lives that day.

From that moment on, I knew physical therapy was where God wanted me.

Kylie Doniak was not there to receive her diploma in 2012. Brackenridge Hospital administrators called the Doniak family and said, ‘Your daughter got hit by a drunk driver.’ Kylie was in a coma for six weeks and, once she was well enough to leave the hospital, returned to California for more medical treatment.

“We were all at home, and we got that phone call at (midnight),” David Doniak, Kylie’s father, said. “It was from Brackenridge, the hospital, called us and said,

Before the accident, Kylie worked with kids at an Austin hospital, where she also helped coordinate volunteers. As she enters the professional world, she hopes to do something similar. “I would want to work with kids whether in a hospital, or I’m applying to do something in California with a school just to get around kids more,” Kylie said.
Kylie says she has kept in contact with her teammates, including those who graduated.
More than two years after the crash, she returned to the Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium, where she had played four years before. 
But this time, she walked across the field to take graduation pictures. Despite many challenges, she knew she’d walk across the stage. “I knew I was going to only ’cause I’m very stubborn, and I’m not going to ever change that, but I didn’t know when,” Kylie said.
“They’re making my weekend fun and all about me, which sounds so greedy, but they’re making it like that because they are just so excited to have me and just give me the experience I didn’t think I was going to get,” Kylie said. “I love it still, and being out there, I’m like, ‘Aw, that’s where I used to do this drill and shoot it right there.’ So I love it still.” “It’s such a nice field,” Kylie said.

Kylie has been in critical condition, with many significant injuries, including broken bones and severe head trauma. However, she has been making immense progress and is on her road to recovery. We ask that prayers stay strong as Kylie continues to win this battle. God has shown his high power and that those who Walk by Faith will be healed.

“She had to learn how to walk again, talk again,” David Doniak said. “You’re like, ‘I don’t think she’ll ever graduate.’ But for her to do it is just unbelievable.

As for the man who hit Kylie, Nicholas Colunga was convicted in August 2013 and sentenced to 14 years in prison. Kylie says she doesn’t have a problem with forgiving him.

A 1964 graduate of Abilene Christian University, Blackwood has been married to Dr. Susan Blackwood, executive director of the San Antonio Sports Foundation, since 1989. Blackwood has one daughter, Jessica, and one granddaughter, Taylor.

Blackwood began his coaching career in 1965 at Corpus Christi W.B. Ray High School, where he served as an assistant track and cross-country coach. His cross-country team won the state championship in 1965 and was runner-up in 1966. From 1967-70, he was the head track and assistant football coach at Corpus Christi King. The next two years, Blackwood assumed the same duties at Richardson High near Dallas.

Blackwood began his collegiate coaching career at the University of Texas in 1972 as an assistant track and field and cross-country coach with the Longhorns. In addition to the All-Americans produced at Texas, Blackwood’s teams captured 13 Southwest Conference Championships. During his 12 years as an assistant at UT, the Longhorns finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships 11 times.

Olympian Patrick Sang (1992 silver medalist), Johnny “Lam” Jones (4×100-meter relay gold medalist), Henry Marsh (American record holder in the steeplechase and four-time Olympian), and James Lott (NCAA high jump champion) are just a few of the outstanding athletes he has coached. In all, Blackwood has mentored 17 Olympians.

In 1985, he was named recruiting coordinator for the Texas football team. The Longhorns captured one Southwest Conference football title and went to three bowls during Blackwood’s recruiting tenure. Twenty-five of his players went on to play in the NFL.

He left the collegiate ranks to work with the Houston Astros Baseball Club. Blackwood returned to college coaching in 1997 as the head cross country and assistant track and field coach at Southern Mississippi University.

Gene Coleman says, James Blackwood was a good friend, great coach, and loyal Longhorn. He will be missed.

Sad to learn of the passing of my lifelong friend James Blackwood. Growing up, my godfather Cleburne Price was the Men’s Head Track Coach for the University of Texas. James was his assistant. I spent countless hours on the track (back when it was still in Memorial Stadium). Coach Blackwood always had some of the best, craziest recruiting stories. As an adult, through my involvement with the Texas Relays Officials Association, I maintained my friendship with Coach. He never failed to stop, ask me about my girls, my law practice and laugh about how Coach Price was so meticulous regarding every detail of the Texas Relays. Godspeed Coach and thank you for all the memories.

Blackwood joined the UTSA track & field coaching staff for nine seasons, the last seven as head coach of the women’s program.

Blackwood, a major figure in Texas track and field, has played a key role in turning the UTSA Relays—now in its ninth year—into one of the premier early outdoor meets in the Southwest. He’s also been an associate director of the Texas Relays since 1972 and has worked on five NCAA Outdoor Championships.

He was a great coach and teacher who helped his athletes achieve their best performance. But more than that, he taught the was a good example to the young boys and helped them become responsible citizens. I treasure the memories I was blessed to enjoy when being a part of his legacy in Corpus Christi. RIP Coach, and thanks for being a part of my life.”

On March 13, 2008, 39-year veteran of athletics in the state of Texas, seventh-year UTSA women’s head track & field coach James Blackwood announced he will retire at the end of this season. He will continue to serve as meet director for all UTSA cross country and track & field meets and as a consultant in the development of the future UTSA track and field complex.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at UTSA,” Blackwood said. “From Dr. Romo to Lynn Hickey and the support staff and student-athletes, we have a great group of people to work with here. It’s been an absolutely wonderful place to work.

Guys, not all of you will know Coach James Blackwood, but those that knew him lost a good friend recently. He was a great friend of mine, we had football tickets next to each other, shared a love of Golden Retrievers, and talked track and Longhorn sports all the time. Cleburn Price hired him in 1972, so we all missed him as a coach, but he ran Texas Relays for many years, was recruiting coordinator for Akers and McWilliams, and probably came to your town to speak at Longhorn gatherings. During his tenure in San Antonio, Blackwood tutored Rhonda Ray and Ryanne Dupree to a combined five All-America certificates and has coached more than 60 all-conference performers and 26 Southland Conference champions. Seventeen school records were broken under his watch.

Coach Blackwood says, “I’ve been around track since 1964, and I’m turning 67 now, so I felt like it was time for me to do some other things. I will really miss the interaction with the kids the most. However, I will still get to be involved with UTSA in running the home meets and helping with the design of the new track and field complex.”

The awards his student-athletes have received are not limited to the track. Roadrunners have garnered two ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America certificates, four Academic All-District accolades, four SLC Student-Athlete of the Year honors and 11 Academic All-SLC awards.

The UTSA administration said, “We are very proud that we have had Coach Blackwood on our staff for the past nine years,” Athletics Director Lynn Hickey said. “He has made a major contribution during his coaching career to thousands of young people, and we are honored that part of that career was here at UTSA.

“We are glad that he has committed to staying a part of our program as the director of our cross country and outdoor track and field meets. Even though he is ready to step away from day-to-day coaching duties, it will be very helpful to still have him as a part of our program in assisting with events and the development of our new track facility.”

Since joining the UT track program in 1972, Coach James Blackwood positively impacted the lives and careers of the hundreds of young men he coached. Teams under Coach Blackwood captured 13 Southwest Conference Championships and finished in the top ten in the NCAA Championship ten times. His exemplary leadership in the Texas Relays and NCAA Championship meets is well-documented. Beginning in 1985, James also led UT football recruiting efforts, signing 24 players who were later drafted by the NFL.

As a result of James’ significant contributions to the University of Texas at Austin, Tim Taft and several other letterwinners set up the Coach James Blackwood Track & Field Endowment. So far, the endowment holds $330,049 toward the $1 million scholarship market value goal. James and I also make annual contributions. We are so grateful to all these treasured donors!

April 9, 2026 is James’ 85th birthday and my goal is UT presenting him with a fully endowed scholarship at the 2026 Texas Relays. James devoted much of his life to the men he coached and to our friends and relatives who through the years enjoyed his many stories. As we approach our goal of a full endowment by April, we are so grateful to those of you who can make a tax-deductible contribution to the endowment.

Each program he led, except for his first two, faced the typical challenges of a start-up. He learned that building a successful program takes more than coaching skills—it demands strong people skills and the ability to adapt. His aggressive style with players, lack of finesse with parents, limited understanding of what motivates American athletes, rocky communication with the athletic department, poor media instincts, his efforts to quell angry fans, and his impatience were all traits ill-suited to launching a team. Without these qualities, his career became a roller coaster of small highs and big lows, and eventually, Texas let him go from his coaching role.

Still, Coach Pibulvech at 49 was one of the all-time winningest women’s soccer coaches in NCAA history. He ranks 18th on the NCAA’s list for career victories with a record of 197-155-23 in 20 seasons as a head coach. During his collegiate career, Pibulvech led his teams to six NCAA Final Four appearances, nine NCAA Tournaments, and has coached 25 Division I All-Americans. Pibulvech was a three-time West Region and two-time Central Region Coach of the Year as awarded by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). When he was hired by Tulsa near the end of his coaching career, the administration stated that “He is a very committed and genuine person, who will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge of the game to our team. Dang understands what it takes to win and compete for a national championship because he has done that at the highest level.

In 2017, TLSN asked Dang to share his Longhorn story. He did! His coaching career captures the highs and lows of starting three different Division I soccer teams from scratch- Washington, Texas, and Nevada.
He did not do well at Texas, and he concedes that point. However, he delivered an important message to all who coach.
It took him years to understand that losing does not dictate self-worth and intrinsic character. Instead, he said, “No coach should gauge their success in winning on a once-in-a-lifetime national championship, but instead should gauge their success in building a program that gives the team a lifetime of chances to win the national title.”

Texas golf Coach Pat Weis agreed with Coach Pibulvech when she says “Winning simply cannot be your only goal. One team and only one team wins.” No wiser statement could ever be made.

On April 28th 2017, I made Facebook contact with Dang Pibulvech. He recently suffered a stroke and his ability to talk and walk was impaired, but he can type. He used my inquiries about his years at Texas to cleanse his soul of some past demons. He said “he still loves Texas” and has great sorrow he did not accomplish his goals to make Longhorn soccer great. His quote, not mine, is that he was the “WRONGHORN”.

He said that the interaction with athletic administrations, alumni, parents, players, and fans was almost impossible to reconcile.

“I have had great leaders and marginal bosses. My greatest leaders were Richard Taber and Dr. Dan Dugan in Reno; they recognized my talent and let me get on with my task, without micro-managing. Athletes were different, even among the kids at one place; they were different from the others! Some athletes were well promoted because college coaches had to satisfy their egos and bragging rights, some coaches played the blame game, and, unfortunately, they had people who lent them an ear. It’s too bad, but part of the process! Our kids had to build themselves; they were nobody and had to earn their reputation. We coached these kids long before they represented Longhorns or Huskies.

Recently, TLSN received word that Texas’s first NCAA soccer coach has serious health issues. One of his friends contacted TLSN and said:
“Some sad news to share with you all. Dang is in a sad state. He is bedridden and has lost most of his mobility. He can’t walk, sit up, or use his arms and hands.” He lives in squalor conditions in a small room with a live-in caregiver.
TLSN offered to help him financially, but no one from his family or friends ever responded to our offer. I understand that his family used GoFundMe to raise money to assist Dang.

Texas was a great place full of competition among the inner cycle, Unfortunately, I was a “WRONGHORN.” I wished and wanted it to be different. After returning to Thailand, I did keep up with the NCAA Championship, and assume Texas has never won it. I hope they will soon. Gives me reasons for joy! My oldest was a Longhorn, my youngest was born in Austin! Proud to have been a part of the growing pain process

Pibulvech was lured from Colorado College, a liberal-arts school with an enrollment of 1,900 that offered women’s soccer at the NCAA Division I level. In his eight seasons as head coach there, the Tigers advanced to seven NCAA tournaments, making it into the Final Four four times. Overall, his teams finished second in the nation four times.

Kit Green, UW senior associate athletic director, said Pibulvech was the obvious choice as coach.

“Next to Anson Dorrance of (perennial powerhouse) North Carolina, he’s probably the top collegiate coach in the country,” Green said.

The son of a Thai Army officer assigned to embassy duty, Pibulvech grew up in many Far East countries. In Bangkok, the city Pibulvech calls home, soccer was so popular that developers relied on the pounding feet of soccer-crazed youth to pack landfills before construction.

Because he never learned to speak Thai and attended only English-speaking schools, he came to the U.S. at 16. He played at Columbia University in New York and transferred to Columbia (Mo.) College, while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in art.

Pibulvech and the players have considered this season a time for adjustment. He said most American players learned the game largely through skill drills, a coaching technique he rejects.

“I come from a street-soccer background, and I think there’s a lot of things the kids are learning that are too structured,” he said.

“Training drills don’t have to be fun for kids to learn. They just have to be effective, constructive and challenging.

“I’m very picky about how they receive balls in certain locations on their body and on the field. I’m very detailed.”

Jensen said the players are slowly adapting to Pibulvech’s style and are eager for next season.

“I’ve learned more from him this season than I’ve learned in my entire life – all my coaches put together,” she said. “I think the commitment’s there on both sides, from him as coach and us as players, to drive ourselves to be the best in the nation.”

His most impressive years as a coach were during his nine-year career at Colorado College. During those years, he led the program to eight consecutive NCAA post-season tournaments and advanced to the NCAA Final Four on four occasions. In 1986 and 1989, his team finished as the national runner-up. The Tigers were ranked as high as second in the nation from 1987 to 1991. During this period, Pibulvech served as the Regional Head Coach for the United States Soccer Federation Girls’ West Regional Olympic Development Program (1988-1991). Pibulvech also served as an assistant coach to the U.S. Women’s National Team at the U.S. Olympic Festival Games and Pre-World Championship European Tour in 1991.

In 2000, Melanie Jackson of ESPN said Pibulvech was “one of college soccer’s greatest coaching icons”.

Dang Pibulvech, who led Colorado College to the NCAA title game in 1986 and 1989 and once served as an assistant coach for the U.S. women’s national team, is one-third of the way through the inaugural season at Nevada, where the women’s soccer team is off to a 2-5 start.

Although the Wolf Pack are currently riding a two-game losing streak and has been outscored 19-9 in their young season, Pibulvech welcomes the challenge of launching a new program.

“I have always considered myself a teacher and a coach,” said Pibulvech, who brought a 186-96-21 all-time record to Nevada. “It doesn’t matter if I’m building a new program; I just look forward to teaching kids to play soccer the right way.”

Starting from scratch is old hat for Pibulvech. After leading Colorado College to eight consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, Pibulvech headed to Seattle, where he headed up Washington’s inaugural class in 1991. In three seasons under Pibulvech, the Huskies played some of the toughest schedules in the country and, at one point, reached No. 8 in the national polls.

Pibulvech left UW after the 1993 season to help start the program at Texas, where he spent five seasons (1994-98) before resigning.

Pibulvech’s résumé extends internationally as well. After spending several years as a coach within the Olympic Development program, he was eventually named head coach for Region IV, which encompasses the 14 western states. Pibulvech also had a couple stints as an assistant coach for the women’s national team when Anson Dorrance was the U.S. coach.

Still, Pibulvech is perhaps best known for his collegiate success at Colorado College, where he was hired for his first head coaching job after three seasons as an assistant at Central Florida. In 1983, five years after Colorado College’s program attained varsity status — and just two seasons after scholarships were first allocated — Pibulvech took over the Tigers, and quickly produced an unbeaten season as CC went 14-0-2.

A year later, the Tigers earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament. Colorado College placed second in 1986 and 1989, suffering 2-0 losses to perennial powerhouse North Carolina in both finals.

Does Pibulvech miss those days?

“I miss them in terms of the quality of the teams and taking them to the Final Four, but there are a lot of coaches out there who are chasing something I’ve already caught,” he said. “Getting back to the Final Four is important to me, but I’m also patient enough to wait for my time to come around again, to build this program and to build it properly go get back there.

“And at the same time, having been there has humbled me. Not too many people have done it, and it has humbled me to know the reality of coaching on that level of success.”

But while there have been many highlights, Pibulvech has survived some bumps along the road as well. After leaving the Longhorns, a disheartened Pibulvech “stopped watching the game” for some time. It wasn’t until after spending last season at Colorado, where he assisted longtime friend Austin Daniels, that the coaching bug struck again.

“Spending time at CU was a big plus for me,” said Pibulvech, who helped the Buffaloes win the Big 12 championship last season. “The group of players there inspired me to continue.”

So far, the season is young at Nevada, but Pibulvech sees progress. For now, the Wolf Pack are a “50-50 mix” of scholarship players and walk-ons.

“We have some very good, quality people, and it’s nothing that time and recruiting won’t heal. It’s just a matter of process right now,” said Pibulvech, who has been allocated 12 scholarships. “If you ask me if we play good, effective and attractive soccer, I’d say we’re about 50 percent there.

“But the good part is that I’m blessed with people who want to learn,”

The best part, Pibulvech said, is that he enjoys every step of the way.

“I come to work happy every day, and I leave work even happier,” he said. “Starting some of these programs has made me a stronger and better coach. The challenge is there. And in the end, the rewards are much stronger.”

“And I’m able to build this team the way I see it needs to be done from all my past experiences. I have a good group of kids here, and for what it’s worth, they’re working hard.”

Sometimes when times are tough, its best to drop everything and just get away.

Texas coach Dang Pibulvech said his team will benefit greatly from last year’s brutal schedule that pitted the Longhorns against ten Top 20 teams.

“We may still be a relatively new program, but we’ve proven that we belong with the top teams,” he said. “We’ve been beaten by some of the best teams in the nation, but we have also beaten some of the best.”

Pibulvech said sophomore Katie Baruth has helped increase the intensity of the team’s play. Baruth, who transferred from Clemson this year, leads the team after three games with five assists.

Pibulvech said he takes great pride in the Longhorns’ unconventional style of play on both offense and defense.

“You are not going to find one player playing at one spot for long,” he said. “We like to see a lot of mobility.”

Texas forward Carol Finch, who led the team in shots, goals, assists and points last year, hasn’t missed a step. She has scored four goals in the Longhorns’ first two games.

“Carol is a naturally gifted scorer,” Pibulvech said. “Now she is playing even better with complement players like Katie.”
