Mark Brooks won two regional tournaments in 1982 and two in 1983. Mark Brooks was an All-American in 1983.

Brandel Chamblee is the SWC champion, medalist at the Pan American Intercollegiate, and the Alarcon Intercollegiate. He won the Morris Williams in 1984.

Horns finish 3rd at the SWC tournament.

1983- Jim Clayton 6-2 and SWC champs- Second in the Nation

The Longhorn team has had the most tournament victories since the early 1970s. Winning 6 tournaments and 4 in a row. Paul Thomas had a chance to win the medalist honors at the NCAA tournament, but he lost in a 4 man playoff.

Texas also lost to Oklahoma State to finish runner-up for the NCAA championship, but the Horns still received the MacGregor/Jack Nicklaus trophy which is given to the #1 team in the nation.

Three Longhorn freshmen, 19 years old, play golf like tournament-hardened seniors. The Horns are ranked 11th in the nation, with Bob Estes, Brian Nelson, and Blair Manasse leading the Team. Bob Estes had a great year, winning the Pan America Intercollegiate, and finished in the top 5 in four of six tournaments with a scoring average of 71.5. Brian Nelson’s scoring average is 75.1, finishing 8th at the Rafael Alarcon tournament and 15th in the Morris Williams tourney. Blair Manasse had the least experience of the three, but he won 4 major titles in Junior play.

Brian Nelson finished in second in the NCAA with 6th other golfers. It was the second time in the 1980s that a Longhorn finished as runner-up at the NCAA tournament. It was Texas’s 10th consecutive top 20 finish.  Bob Estes  was the 1988 Collegiate Player of the Year

Bob Estes is the medalist in six regional tournaments from 1985 to 1988.

·       Three-time All-American and four-time All-SWC selection

·       Won four tournaments during senior year

·       1988 NCAA Player of the Year

·       He was the 1989 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year

Bob Estes became the first player since Ben Crenshaw to win both the Williams and Harvey Penick tournaments in the same year.

The golf team finished 2nd in the SWC, winning three tournaments for the season.    Estes and Board lead the Team.

The Team wins four tournaments

Taylor Tipton is a medalist at a regional tournament. Omar Uresti is a medalist in two tournaments, in 1989 and 1990.

Brian Nelson, recovering from major back surgery in 1988, makes the All-SWC team in 1989 with Brad Agee, Kyle Jerome, and Omar Uresti. Uresti finished 12th at the NCAA tournament.

1989-1990 Coach Jim Clayton -SWC champion- 22nd nationally

Horns were picked 4th in the Fall of 1989 national polls, but the Team struggled in the Spring of 1990. Brad Agee and Omar Uresti led the Team all year long with top 10 rankings, but they were ambushed at the nationals, finishing 22nd.

It was a lackluster year, but the Horns were SWC champions and tournament champions. They won two of three essential tournaments, and Omar Uresti won the Harvey Penick and All-America tournaments. They were in the top 10 all year long.   

Men’s golf- The Team places first at the Morris Williams Tournament. Bob Estes was the medalist. The Team won the SWC championship. Brad Agee and Brian Nelson led the Team.

Still, the Team placed in the top 5 in 7 of the 11 tournaments that they played.

1990-1991 – Jim Clayton was first in the SWC and 9th at the NCAA tournament. 

A year of highs and lows. Teams finished in the top 4 in the first 4 tournaments.

70 of the 76 college sports do not generate enough revenue to pay for TV exposure, so many of these sports depend on the television money generated from Division I basketball of college basketball to gain national exposure. Golf is one of them. 

Golf could pay their way, but the NCAA did not want golfers looking like walking logos for sponsors. Therefore, the NCAA has decided to limit the amount of commercialism that can be displayed tightly. 

Justin Leonard failed to sign his scorecard at the NCAA tournament, and his score was disqualified. 

Leonard’s coach says that Justin “has the work ethic of Kite, but he also has a feel for the game of Crenshaw.” Justin says his significant strengths are consistency and mental toughness. 

Justin Leonard is the first Freshman since Lance Ten Broeck was the SWC medalist in 1975. Jean-Paul Hebert was second.

Medalist at the NCAA 1994 and SWC conference medalist in 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1994, and

10-25-91- Leonard and Sosa lead the Horns. Leonard is known as the “J”ker” “or his smile and Sosa is known as a Johnny Divot for his massive divots.

1991-1992- Content- Jim Clayton’s team won the SWC tournament and finished 6th in the NCAA tournament.

The Longhorns captured their 4th straight SWC tournament title. Justin Leonard became the first Longhorn to take back-to-back SWC individual medalist honors since Ben Crenshaw.

Horns won their 3rd tournament at the Morris Williams, beating 4 teams that were ranked higher in the process.

Jean-Paul Hebert was a medalist at the Don Shula/University of Miami Collegiate Invitation. It was Hebert’s first win at Texas. Freshman Harrison Frazar also finished in the top 5 at the Don Shula tournament.

Clayton says about Leonard, “For his age, he’s the best I ‘ve ever had.”

Justin Leonard was a four-time professional tournament winner when he entered the Texas Open in 2000, winning the tournament by five strokes. He said after the victory, “Don’t read a lot of golf magazines,” and “I don’t watch a lot of golf on television, but I know that I haven’t hit in 2 1/2 years. It’s like a little burden lifted.” In 2001 and 2007, he repeated as the winner of the Texas Open.

Justin Leonard, Michael Cooper, and Jean-Paul Hebert all contributed to a great season.

Justin LeLeonard’s roommate was Stuart Wallace, and was part of the Team that placed 5th in the nation. The Horns finished 11 strokes behind Florida. Justin Leonard missed five college tournaments to play in the Masters, Colonial, Byron Nelson Classic, Houston Open, and Bay Hill Classic. In the eight college tournaments he participated in, Justin won three individual titles. The Team only won one tournament without his participation. Justin won the 3rd straight SWC title. Jean-Paul Hebert was runner-up.

1992-1993 – Jim Clayton team with the 5th straight SWC Championship and places 5th at the NCAA tournament.

1993- 1994 Coach Jim Clayton 6- peat SWC champions – Team finishes runner-up at the NCAA tournament

Jim Clayton is the Conference Coach of the Year.

Leonard is the Male Athlete of the Year in the SWC, joining past winners Brooks Kieschnick, Scott Bryant, and Greg Swindell. He won 4 consecutive SWC medalist awards.

Justin is the men’s CAA individual golf champion.

Leonard leads the Team with Jean-Paul Hebert. Depth was the key to success this year. Harrison Frazar tied for 7th at the NCAA championship tournament, helping the Team to a runner-up position.

Hebert was an honorable mention All-America and posted the second-best average on the Team in 1993 with a 73.55 through 16 tournaments, finishing second at the SWC championship and a third-place tie at the NCAA championship in 1993. Frazer entered the 1994 season with a 74.08 average per tournament. Wallace averaged 75.16 per tournament played.

In 1995, Jim Clayton finished first in the Southwest Conference (SWC) and placed third in the NCAA tournament. The Longhorns returned with three All-Americans, with Justin Leonard and Brad Elder leading the team. The SWC championship was decided by a 5-foot putt, resulting in a victory by just one stroke over the Aggies, with Brad Elder paving the way. The team earned the title of SWC Champions.

Tom Kite dropped by to see if Harvey Penick was well enough to join him in the dedication of the life-size bronzes of him and Harvey. Harvey passed away shortly after this meeting. Some of Harvey’s pupils included Tom Kite, Ben Crenshaw, Davis Love III, Kathy Whitworth, Mickey Wright, and Betsy Rawls.

-1996 Jim Clayton – The great Longhorn winning streak is over. Texas is 5th in the SWC and 13th at the NCAA tournament.

Inconsistencies plagued this Team, finishing last among 15 teams at a tournament in Lake Forest, Ill, followed by a lackluster performance at the Red River Classic, finishing 10th of 17 teams.

Longhorn Hall of Honor inductee Brad Elder is one of only four Longhorns to win the nation’s most prestigious collegiate golfer of the year honor, the Fred Haskins Award. His most successful season as a Longhorn came as a junior in 1997, when he earned the Haskins Award. That year,  He finished his collegiate career as the nation’s. 1 amateur according to the Golfweek/Titleist amateur rankings.

Reflection Point

July 1, 1997 – Jimmy Clayton announced his retirement. Jim led the Horns to six top-five finishes in the NCAA tournaments, with three teams finishing as runner-ups to the national champion. Jim had 8 SWC championships, including 7 in a row from 1989 to 1995. Clayton was voted 6 time winner of SWC Coach of the year by his peers. Coach Clayton had 16 All-Americans and three Players of the Year: Elder, Leonard, and Estes.

This was an outstanding team with great Leadership from  White and Neil Unterseher.  The Longhorns dominated the SWC members beating Rice 5-1, A & M 6-0, Texas Tech 6-0, and SMU 5-1.

Coach Penick says that Walters has no weaknesses. He even has more accolades for Jackie Kamrath. Allison says “the smartest tennis player I’ve ever coached….He’s a good tactician; he can think, both on and off the court.” He has all the shots and the brains.

Season started awful with losses to Pan American, Trinity, St. Edward, and the University of Corpus christi. Team finally got on court against SWC foes and barely won the championship over Rice.

David Nelson – a sophomore- shines this season.  Team finishes second in conference play with Bill Driscoll and Leo Laborde having a 4-2 single conference record.   In 5 years as Tennis Coach, Wilmer Allison has a 142-38 conference record and two SWC championships.

Texas was 7-1 in SWC dual meets, but the Conference determined the standing on the number of individual matches won, and Texas’s 33-16 mark placed them 3rd in the Conference. Dan Nelson, the MVP, Ron Touchon, and Graham Wahling were the Longhorn top three seeds. Snyder said that this team played to its potential when they were 7-1.

Two back of Overturf was Tom Kite. 

Kite breaks the 144-hole Massingill  Tournament by a record 28 strokes. 

After consulting with Coach Hannon, AD Darrell Royal decides that the SWC needs to convert from match play to stroke play to become more competitive with the University of Houston’s seven national championship trophies. Royal decides not to play any SWC team that does not switch to stroke play. The other teams in the SWC refused, and Texas played no round-robin games with SWC teams in 1970.

Ben Crenshaw, a freshman, and Tom Kite lead the University of Texas to consecutive NCAA titles (1971-1972)

On the last day of the NCAA tournament, the team was 15 down. Florida, Wake Forest, and Houston were in the lead. Kite and Crenshaw were on fire, and Texas won by seven shots. The team’s 275 set an NCAA Championship record. 

For the first time in the history of NCAA championship golf, Texas shot sub-par golf during the four-day National championship tournament.

Crenshaw was the individual National champion in 1971 and ’73, and he shared the crown with Kite in 1972.

Crenshaw was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.

He wins 18 Collegiate Tournaments.

He is First team All American and recognized as the Nations Most Outstanding Collegiate Golfer in 1971, ’72, and ’73

He has a breath-taking 70.61 stroke average during his college career.

Ben Crenshaw was the first Longhorn Medalist at the NCAA Championship event since 1935.

Harvey Penick says that Ben was a natural who disliked practice.

Hannon praises Tony Pfaff, Brent Buckman, and George Tucker for their outstanding play at the championship tournament, saying that “first man out” Tucker’s 71 took the pressure off the other Longhorn golfers.

Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw were co-medalists at the NCAA championship in 1972.

Harvey had a special place in his heart for Tom Kite. In the book “Harvey Penick” by Kevin Robbins, the author states that “Kite is a driven man with a colossal work ethic,” but he had “a fraction of the athletic ability of someone like Crenshaw.” “Golf never came easily to Kite, but he worked so hard at the game that he seemed to bend its will in his favor. Crenshaw won with ambivalent grace. Kite won with rabid commitment”. Harvey Penick said Tom had a “fire smoldering inside of him to succeed.” Tom succeeded because of the countless hours he practiced his shots. Tom knew there was a difference between practice and hitting balls. He said, “Practice requires concentration while hitting balls does not.”

Ben Crenshaw wins a record 3rd medalist honor at the NCAA Championship.

Bob Harwell is a medalist at the Bevo Classic.

Jim Mason was a three-time regional medalist in 1973, 1974, and 1975.  

Ben needed help to win the SWC, and he got it from Warren Chancellor, Tony Pfaff, Brent Buckman, and Johnny Dill.

 Crenshaw gave up his senior year to go pro, and his loss ended with Houston and Texas tied for the SWC championship. It took Mason’s 50-foot putt on the last hole to garner the tie.

The Horns had to scratch and fight year-round to salvage the year. The team placed 8th at the Pan American tournament and 9th at the Border Olympics before finally winning their first tournament.

SWC Champs- 11th at the All-American Intercollegiate Invitational and first at the Pan American and Morris Williams tournaments. Bedillion and Simmons are the most consistent on the team.

Lance Ten Broeck was an SWC Medalist In 1975, winning the Harvey Penick tournament. He was also a medalist at the SWTSU Bobcat Invitational in 1976.

Randy Simmons is a medalist at the All-College Classic.  

Dale Blackburn is a medalist at the Bevo Classic.

Randy Simmons is the team captain. He thought this team could win the National Championship, but he was wrong. Texas did not win a single major tournament this year. They even struggled to finish second in the SWC.

Jerry Anderson, Jamin Swanter, Tom Wilson, Jerry Anderson, and Randy Simmons are all regional play medalists. 

Bedillion quits the team to focus on his studies. 

1977 – Coach Hannon

The team finished fourth in the SWC. It was a bad year. They placed 10th at the Pan American and 11th in the LSU tournament.

Phil Blackmar is UT’s top man this year and is helped by Chaffe and Warren Aune.

Improving a golfer’s game is tough enough when he or she knows what to correct, but it is almost impossible to improve if you don’t know what the problem is. Collectively, the Goff team and Coach did not know what to correct. Coach Hannon’s frustration showed when he said, ‘I do not know what we’re doing wrong. If I knew what it was, I’d change it.’

Houston continued to dominate the SWC, finishing third at the SWC Championship, third at the prestigious All-American Intercollegiate Tournament in Houston, and second in the Harvey Penick tournament.

Andy Rose, Cutts Benedict, and Jim Spagnolo are all regional medalists.

1981 George Hannon -SWC Camps

Coach Hannon liked the potential of this team, saying, “We’ve got depth, experience,” and talent to go far in the NCAA. The only hiccup was that star player Jim Spagnolo was having trouble transferring 6 hours of credit from a college in Pennsylvania to Texas and was deemed ineligible for the first golf tournament in Oklahoma City. He was replaced by former football player Jon Aune’s brother, Greg Aune. 

Lawrence Fields and Mark Brooks led the team to victory in the SWC against the hard-driving Houston Cougars. It was Texas’ first outright SWC championship since 1973

1906-1941

In the early years, most coaches are hired primarily to coach football first and basketball second. Basketball coaches receive no pay.

Games in the early years are low-scoring because there is a jump ball for possession after each score.

There is no official recruiting system. Many of the players came from the UT intramural system or showed up on campus to try out for the team.

The players do not receive scholarships. Instead, UT helps players procure part-time jobs to cover the costs of room and board.

Texas played its first basketball game on March 10, 1906, defeating Baylor 27-17. The team posted a 7-1 record.

1908- basketball was canceled due to funding

Feb. 6, 1909: Texas defeats Austin HS 56-4 in the first game after a one-year hiatus due to inadequate funding for the program. Morgan Vining was the man held mostly responsible for the revival of Texas Basketball. “We must give credit to Vining and his men for preserving a game that will mean much to Texas athletics in the future,” the 1909 Cactus Yearbook said.

The Daily Texan and Morgan Vining Convince the UT administration that basketball is “Good Physical Training For Football Players In The Off-Season.” Texas reinstates basketball as a major sport, and the presentation of the “T” letter to UT basketball players is resumed. Teams on the Texas schedule include the Deaf and Dumb Institute and a high school from San Antonio.

1910-1919: Texas has the 4th-highest winning percentage in the USA.

Feb. 11, 1911: The Longhorns make their first trip east of the Mississippi River when they drop a 45-27 decision at Auburn. The contest marked the second of a three-game road trip that saw Texas play at Tulane, Auburn, and LSU in a five-day span. An excerpt from the 1911 Cactus Yearbook stated, “They took a Southern tour, which was disastrous from the standpoint of victory but glorious for spreading the Texas spirit of good sportsmanship. Our team had better individual players than the teams played, but the games were held indoors and at night, conditions which were entirely new to the Texas team.”

Texas adventures out of state for the First time to play Oklahoma.

The decision is made not to play teams below the college level.

For the first time, Texas plays games East of the Mississippi—Tulane, Auburn, and LSU. Each of these Universities has indoor facilities, which requires the Texas team to adjust from outdoor games to indoor games.

1912-13 season: Texas finishes the year with an 8-4 record. More importantly, basketball had become a major athletic program at The University of Texas. “Basketball is no longer a minor sport at the University of Texas. It always has been so considered until this year when Professor Carl Cleveland Taylor took charge of the work and infused new life into it,” the 1913 Cactus Yearbook said.

From 1913 to 1917, Texas entered the Record Books With A 44 44-game win Streak.

Jan. 13, 1913: Texas defeats San Marcus Baptist 46-2 in its first indoor home game. The Cactus Yearbook said, “An innovation was made this season by playing all of the games on an indoor court at Ben Hur Temple. This proved very satisfactory, and as most of the games were played at night, they were well attended.” The Temple was located at the intersection of Lavaca and West 18th Street. This also marked the first year that UT began selling season tickets.

1913-1917: Texas records a school-record 44 consecutive wins over a stretch of five seasons. The achievement still ranks as the fifth-longest winning streak in Division I history. The Horns began the streak with a 70-7 win at Southwestern on Feb. 15, 1913, before closing out the 1912-13 season with two home victories. Texas then posted three consecutive undefeated seasons: 11-0 in 1913-14, 14-0 in 1914-15, and 12-0 in 1915-16. The Horns open the 1916-17 campaign with four straight wins before dropping a 24-18 decision to Rice in Austin to end the streak. UT’s .789 winning percentage from 1910 through 1919 was the fourth-best mark in the NCAA for that decade. Only the Navy, California, and Wisconsin had better winning percentages in the 1910s.

1914-15 season: Under coach L. Theo Bellmont, the Horns posted a perfect record en route to capturing their first Southwest Conference championship in the league’s first season of competition. Clyde Littlefield leads the SWC in scoring at 19.6 ppg, a mark that stood until the 1943-44 season.

The 1914 basketball team has the distinction of winning the first-ever SWC conference championship.

Two football players- Clyde Littlefield and Gus “Pig” Dittmar- led the team, and Littlefield is the first Longhorn basketball player named as an All-American.

Littlefield, during his playing years at Texas, led the basketball team to 40 straight victories.

Jan. 10, 1916: The Longhorns defeat San Marcus Baptist 102-1 to record the largest margin of victory in UT history. Robert Blaine scored 30 points, while Clyde Littlefield added 26. The game also marked the first time the Longhorns topped the century mark, a feat they did not accomplish again until the 1955-56 season.

Jan. 15, 1917: Texas defeats Southwest Texas 52-15 in the first game played in the newly-built Men’s Gym. The contest marked the first home game for the Horns to be played indoors. The $9,000 facility was built adjacent to Clark Field with a seating capacity of 2,500. It would serve as the home of the Longhorns for the next 12 years.

USA enters WWI

From 1917 to 1929, Texas played in a fire Hazard, which was built for $9000. The University constructed the Men’s Gym adjacent to Clark Field to serve as the temporary home of the Texas men’s basketball team, pending a permanent gymnasium. Built for a total cost of $8,500, the all-wood Men’s Gym measured 115′ by 105′ and 23′ high and featured a pinewood floor, an electric scoreboard, and seating for 2,500 spectators.

On March 25, 1928, the Men’s Gym caught fire and burned to the ground. The team had no home on campus for two seasons. No one was hurt.

For the 1928–29 season, the University played its home games in the School for the Deaf. The gym was small, so it precluded ticket sales to the general public and a lottery for fans and season ticket holders.

Prolonged inclement weather delayed the completion of Gregory Gymnasium, originally intended to debut in 1929–30. Texas was forced to play games an extra year at The School for the Deaf and the newly built Austin High School facility.

Bellmont hires Doc Stewart as the head coach for football and basketball. Coach Stewart’s resume is impressive –  a medical school graduate, pianist, sportswriter, orator, and an automobile dealer, but as Longhorn Coach, football and basketball’s fortune plummeted after his first-year successes.

Mar. 8, 1924: Texas posts a 17-11 victory against archrival Texas A&M in College Station. The win clinches the fourth and final undefeated season in school history, as the Horns register a 23-0 record. Texas also claims the SWC championship with a 20-0 record.

Coach Stewart Implements an offense that focuses on ball movement with minimal dribbling and man-to-man defense

Feb. 26, 1924: Texas makes its first trip to Fayetteville, Ark. and tops the Razorbacks 30-26. The game was the first of 149 games in the series against Arkansas. The following night the Longhorns defeated the Razorbacks again 32-21.

According to Longhorn Hoops, the History of Texas Basketball by Richard Pennington Coach Walker is accused of taking some of the Texas player’s complimentary tickets and selling them for his own benefit. Some of the team members ask the UT administration to dismiss Coach Walker. Captain Bull Elkins refuses to play any more games for Coach Walker. 

Despite not winning the SWC in 1929  this team was touted by many critics as “The Greatest Team in the Southwest.

Ed Olle has a special knack for coaching basketball. Ed Olle brought the Horns their first national championship in 1924. At Texas, he lettered in basketball, baseball, and football from 1925- 1927. and won the prestigious Norris Trophy in 1927. As a basketball coach his players mastered the one-handed shot, and his player Jack Gray was a master.

Jerry Gray changes basketball shooting technique forever by shooting with just one hand instead of two.

 Gray became the first Longhorn to score more than 300 points in a season.

A TCU coach attributes some of his success to a new idea called “recruiting” instead of selecting players through tryouts and scouting the intramural leagues.

Mar. 4, 1933: The Longhorns defeat Texas A&M 51-20 in Gregory Gym to claim their sixth SWC Championship and first since 1924. Texas finished the season 22-1. Since then, no Longhorn team has finished with a better overall record.

By 1933, school spirit and attendance at athletic events started to grow, resulting in general admiration for athletic accomplishments. Jack Gray was one of them.

Mar. 4, 1933: Jack Gray posts a school record 32 points to lead Texas to a 51-20 victory against arch-rival Texas A&M in Gregory Gym. The point total is a staggering number for this era of basketball when the game still featured the center jump and team scores in the ’40s. Gray’s single-game mark stands as the top mark in Southwest Conference play for the next 16 years.

Marty Karow coached the backfield and end coach for Texas in 1926. He was promoted to head basketball coach in  1934 but also was the boxing instructor and freshman basketball and baseball coach from 1933-1934.

End of 1934-35 season: Jack Gray earns consensus first-team All-America honors. Gray becomes not only the first Longhorn (and one of only three UT players in school history) but also the first player in Southwest Conference history to garner first-team All-America accolades. Gray led the SWC in scoring three consecutive years

A chronic wrist injury changed the course of Brad Elder’s professional career, but there’s no questioning his impact on the University of Texas men’s golf program, where he was a two-time first-team All-American.

After capturing the 1994 5A Boys State Golf Tournament individual title and 1994 Western Amateur, Elder came to Austin, where he finished a stellar collegiate career as the nation’s No. 1 amateur according to Golfweek/Titleist amateur rankings, and was named the winner of the Fred Haskins Award, presented annually to honor the most outstanding collegiate golfer in the United States. He amassed more than $2.6 million in earnings as a pro while bouncing between the then Web.com Tour and the PGA Tour, and played in a trio of U.S. Opens.

Elder is one of five individuals who were unveiled in the Texas Golf Hall of Fame’s 2022 class earlier this week. He’ll be honored at the hall’s traditional Gathering of Eagles golf tournament and marker unveiling at Brackenridge Park along with a formal induction dinner ceremony at San Antonio Country Club, both to be held on Oct. 17. All festivities are open to the public with information at texasgolfhof.org.

Martin was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on May 3, 1982. He is the only Longhorn to be so honored. On January 31, 2009, the University of Texas retired his jersey number 15, making him the second Longhorn basketball player to have his number retired. He is also the first Longhorn to play in the NBA.

In 2004 the 44,000 square foot Denton A. Cooley Pavilion was dedicated. The facility is where both the women and men practice on separate courts. It was one of the best workout facilities in the country when built.

Denton Cooley wanted to be a jock, not a doctor in his younger years. Fortunately, the confused younger Cooley at Texas discovered the heart and became one of the most esteemed surgeons in the world.

Denton was a 6-4 walk-on center in 1939 and played an important role in winning the SWC championship and participating in the NCAA basketball tournament.

There were no flights to Madison Square Garden, so the team hopped on a train to play Manhatten College. The Horns won. The next day they played in Temple in Philadelphia and lost.

The Horns started the NCAA playoffs heading by train to San Francisco. Coach Gray noticed that Cooley was in the dining car eating buckwheat pancakes. Gray looked at Denton and said, “No buckwheat for you, Buckwheat!” The name stuck for the rest of his years at Texas.

Coach Lemons probably would never have seen—or even heard of—Branyan had it not been for George Brewer, a friend of Tyrone’s father and a former football teammate of Texas Athletic Director Darrell Royal. When Branyan was a sophomore at Cypress Junior College in California, Brewer wrote Royal about him, and Royal passed the letter on to Lemons.

Abe had never heard of Branyan, but the letter sounded so interesting that he sought a more detailed evaluation from Tyrone’s junior-college coach. Lemons liked the coach’s report enough that he gave Branyan a scholarship sight unseen. Only then did he dispatch Assistant Coach Barry Dowd to check him out.

Texas Coach Abe Lemons took Branyan without ever having seen him play, which may have been to Lemons’ advantage.

After watching Branyan play in a junior-college tournament, Dowd called Lemons and said, “Picture a guy who can’t jump, can’t run and shoots funny. Now picture him with 24 points, 17 rebounds and the Most Valuable Player trophy in the championship game.”

Lemons was overjoyed—until he actually saw Branyan himself the next fall. As is his custom, Branyan was in poor shape when he showed up for preseason workouts, and he was anything but impressive on the practice floor. When he got a chance to play, Lemons says, “People were aghast.” However, by the second conference game Branyan was a starter, and he finished the year with respectable averages of 12.8 points and 5.7 rebounds. “If Tyrone could jump up and spin around twice and then score,” says Lemons, “everybody would ooh and aah. But he isn’t that kind of player. He’s exceeded my expectations by about a million.”

The oddest thing about Branyan is the way he shoots his jump shot—off his chest. The best thing about him is the way his teams always win.

Respect is something Branyan has learned to live without. Instead of reveling in his success, he questions it, scoffing at the suggestion that he or his team is anything special. “It’s hard for me to think we’re as good as the top teams,” he says. “I guess I still look up to those people, because I never thought I could play with them.”

And Texas can thank Branyan for its semi-lofty status. He is averaging 18.2 points and 7.4 rebounds and has been the only consistent performer during Texas’ 16-5 season.

Ron Baxter and Abe Lemons- A duo that changed The History of Longhorn Basketball.

In the book Abe Lemons Court Magician by Bob Burke and Kenny Franks, Abe Lemons is quoted as saying I like to recruit “a wild guy, somebody that’s stung by a bee.” “I like a wild horse that just tears up the gym.” “I like people with unusual characteristics that you can calm down and help make something of.” Abe liked players that had been given nicknames from his teammates, such as “adding machine” or the “helicopter.”

On his first recruiting trip to California as the Longhorn head coach, he found an individual that qualified for his “type” of a recruit.

Ron Baxter was Abe Lemons’s first great recruit at Texas. Ron was the high school co-player of the year in Los Angeles. Abe says, “I saw him (Ron) play against the Russians.” “The Russians even brought their official.” “Talk about a crook.” The local paper after the game says, “Russians introduce six-man basketball to the U.S.” Abe saw a lot of potential in Ron during the game, even though Coach Lemons criticized his play, saying, “Baxter passes too much” “Doesn’t shoot enough.” “Shot only twice against the Russian.” “He made one.” Abe knew that Ron was a great athlete, and he just needed a coach who would encourage him to shoot more.

Ron says he chose UT over other schools because Abe convinced him he could be part of building a great program. In the book “You Scored One More Point Than a Dead Man,” organized by Robert Heard, Ron Baxter says about Coach Lemons style “There was none of this, You’ll have breakfast at seven, and you do such and such at 8:00 and …..” “He did not act like a coach.” Baxter also liked his tart tongue. “He cut me up pretty good for not moving down the baseline one time when I was inbounding against a full-court press, and he told me I couldn’t get open (for a shot) if a dead man guarded me, and that I couldn’t hit the basket with a shotgun.”

In the book, Abe Lemons Court Magician  Ron tells a story about how he learned the difference between Abe coaching at practice and Abe at all other times. He says one day at practice, “From the moment he grabbed my shirt, I knew this man was business in practice. He might have said some funny things to loosen us up, but he demanded my attention every moment in every exercise. I knew if I wanted to play, I had to go all out in practice.”

Baxter Loved The Lemons System Saying “It’s Take The Quick, Good Shot.” “You Just Play Basketball.” “If You Can Get Open Inside 20 Feet, You Take Your Shot”. “We Ran A Stack To Get The Ball To Jim Krivacs On The Baseline.” “If Not, It’s Free Lance And Goes One On One.” Ron Baxter Says Lemon Coached To His Players Ability”. He Does Not “Make Them Fit Into A System.” “He Is The Best Sideline Coach In The Nation.”

Abe was not one to pass out compliments easily. The player had to earn his praise. Abe says about Ron, “From the standpoint of basketball instinct, and the ability to do so many things so well, he’s as good a freshman as I’ve ever had.”

Baxter took some heavy hits from the New York media about his weight. Before the NIT Final Four in New York, Texas was playing Rutgers and Georgetown was playing N.C. State in the semis. It was a public shoot around and Georgetown coach John Thompson is standing with Abe when he points at Ron and says: “Who is the fat kid? Abe answers: “He’s my best player.”

Baxter proved Abe right. Baxter was CO-MVP of the NIT tournament scoring 26 points. In all 4 tournament games he scored 71 points and had a a tournament high 41 rebounds. Marquette’s 6-10” Jerome Whitehead said about Baxter “they had a 6’4” guy (Ron Baxter) who was pounding everybody up.”

“ Ron says about Lemons match up zone defense. His (Lemons) defenses are extremely complex, but they’re effective. A couple of teams ….had no idea of how to attack our defense, they didn’t even know what defense we were running””

Ron Baxter ends his career as SWC player of the year and he sets 7 school records his senior season including all-time leading scorer and rebounder.

Jimmy Blacklock

Blacklock honored as Globetrotters ‘Legend,’ reflects on time at UT

After two years at Tyler Junior College, Blacklock signed with Texas. He joined the Longhorns one year after Sam Bradley. Bradley averaged 6.5 points per game during the 1969-70 season, but Blacklock quickly took on the starring role, averaging 16.6 points per game.

Blacklock was honored as a Globetrotters ‘Legend,’ reflecting on his time at UT.

He was the team’s MVP for the 1970-71 season, and Coach Black named him captain of the 1972 team. The 19 wins in 1972 were the most for a Longhorn basketball team in 24 years. The 1972 team also shared the SWC championship for the first time in seven years.

Blacklock says he developed a respect for a few of his teammates, but that admiration did not lead to any friendships. He wasn’t helped by any teammates when he got into a fight during a game at Mississippi. He told the Austin American Statesman, “I think had I been a player of a different race (the experience) would have been beautiful, incredible, but I wasn’t,” Blacklock said. “I loved the ball-playing. I loved the education. Socially, it was a disaster.”

After graduation, he chose to join the Harlem Globetrotters as a player and then as a coach. He returned to Austin only one time in 30 years. It was only after he was inducted into the Hall of Honor in 2016 that he finally felt appreciated for his accomplishments. For the first time, he realized that he played an essential part in the history of Longhorn sports.

AUSTIN, Texas — Jimmy Blacklock became a Harlem Globetrotter’s “Legend” Friday night, the most prestigious distinction short of jersey retirement that the organization gives. At the University of Texas, he was already a legend – even if it took him and others some time to realize it.

“He was a pioneer,” former teammate Harry Larrabee said. “When you’re in the midst of that, it was hard to see the future, but obviously, it was monumental for the university, the Southwest Conference, college basketball.”

Blacklock was the first African American starter on the Texas men’s basketball team, the first to lead the team in scoring, and the first to be named a captain. His efforts were critical in the steps to full integration and full acceptance at Texas.

“I didn’t see the significance of it, but every year for the last 15, 20 years, I really thought about it, and it’s just been painted into my mind that, yeah, I may have had a lot of things to have done with that,” Blacklock said.

“I stood on somebody else’s shoulders, and that shoulder was my coach Leon Black. This guy was strong and mighty, and he took a chance with me,” he said.

In 1896 he and Ray McLane are co-captains of the football team.  Ray is a shot putter and hammer throw specialist.

T.W. Gregory (Gregory Gym) is a time keeper.

B.T. Van Zandt of Paris, Texas receives the first monogrammed letter as a sprinter.

 The Cactus in 1896, 1897, and 1898 gave no press to Track and Field.  Things changed in 1902 when the team took first place at the Texas Collegiate meet.

Tex Ramsdell In 1906 is one of the best all round athletes of all time at Texas. He  ran a unheard of 9.8 for the 100 and is equally impressive in the 220, 440, mile, and broad jump. He still holds a record that will probably never be broken by winning the 100, 220, 440, and finishing 2nd in the 880 in one track meet.

Starting in 1912 thru 1918 Texas wins six T.I.A.A. Conference championships.

Maj. General Kearie Lee Berry 1912-1924   – because of WWI K.L. Berry spread his years as a Longhorn over 12 years.

• Received honors in wrestling, football, and track from 1912 -1924.

• A career Army man, he survived the famous Bataan Death March and 40 months as a prisoner of war. He earned a Purple Heart, Silver Star, and Distinguished Service Cross

• Named Adjutant General of Texas in 1947

1913 is Clyde Littlefields freshman year at Texas.

Clyde Littlefield is leading scorer for the season (54 points)

(December) the Southwest Athletic Conference forms (SWC).

Clyde Littlefield broke the world’s record in the high hurdles.

At a T.I.A.A. meet in Waco the Longhorns score more points than all the other contestants combined.

1915 The Southwest Athletic Conference is formed. Horn track team wins the championship.

The war ends and track returns to prominence slowly. Before the war the Longhorn track team had accumulated 6 undefeated seasons in conference play.  But the war requires that the college athletes trade their track uniforms for military uniforms and the return of track for the Longhorns is the worst  point score (17) in the history of Texas Track and Field. The Sooners dominate the Conference.
