 Happy Feller was Texas’s All‑American kicker who played for the Horns from 1968–1970. He is  famous for record‑setting long field goals and for kicking the winning PAT in the 1969 “Game of the Century.”

Against O.U., he set a then-school record with a 53-yard field goal, followed by a 55-yarder against UCLA in 1970, and a SWC record of 55 PATs. 

In 2014, Feller was inducted into the University of Texas Athletics Hall of Honor, cementing his place among the program’s greats. He later became a very successful business owner in Austin.

– Known for his community involvement, he was active in his church and promoted tennis well into his 70s.

Chris Gilbert will be honored at the Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet in 2025.
Chris Gilbert was a standout running back for the Texas Longhorns from 1966 to 1968. He was the first player in NCAA history to record three 1,000-yard rushing seasons, achieving this milestone with 1,080 yards as a sophomore, 1,019 yards as a junior, and 1,132 yards as a senior. Gilbert was a consensus All-American in 1968, a three-time first-team All-Southwest Conference (SWC) selection, and the SWC Player of the Year in 1968.
 
He was also co-captain of the 1968 Longhorn team that shared the SWC championship and finished 8th in Heisman Trophy voting that year. Gilbert was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999 and the University of Texas Hall of Honor in 1978.

DALLAS (SMU) – The PwC SMU Athletic Forum has selected former University of Texas running back Chris Gilbert as the recipient of the 2024 PwC Doak Walker Legends Award. The award was created in 1998 to honor former running backs that excelled at the collegiate level and went on to distinguish themselves as leaders in their communities.
 
Gilbert will be honored at the Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet on Friday, January 31, 2025 on the SMU campus in Dallas along with the 2024 Doak Walker Award recipient, Ashton Jeanty, who was named at the Home Depot College Football Award on Thursday, December 12.
 
Texas Longhorn legend Chris Gilbert cemented himself in college football history by becoming the first player to rush for 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons (1966-68). In his college career, Gilbert received All-Southwest Conference honors three times and was a consensus All-American as a senior in 1968. After college, Gilbert would go on to be drafted in the fifth round of the NFL/AFL Draft by the New York Jets. He would later be inducted into the University of Texas Hall of Honor in 1978, the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame in 1990 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
 
After graduating, Chris Gilbert, along with his former Texas Longhorns teammate Corby Robertson, co-founded Camp Olympia in 1968, which has since become one of the most successful summer camps in Texas. The camp has provided generations of children with a positive and enriching experience, playing a significant role in the local community. Following his time in the football world, Gilbert transitioned into a successful career as an investor and business executive in Houston. His business ventures have flourished, demonstrating his strong leadership and entrepreneurial skills. Camp Olympia, a key part of his post-football legacy, remains a testament to his commitment to youth development and the Texas community.
 
Gilbert was inducted into the Texas Hall of Honor in 1978, the Texas High School Hall of Fame in 1990 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
 
The Doak Walker Award presented by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum has been awarded to the nation’s top running back since 1990. The Doak Walker Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association. Founded in 1997, the NCFAA includes college football’s most prestigious awards and its 24 awards have honored more than 900 recipients dating back to 1935. Shawn Clynch is a retired sportscasting veteran with a long sports media career. He was a multimedia journalist, sports anchor, and reporter for various stations, including KVUE Austin, KOKH FOX 25 Oklahoma City, and KTRE Lufkin-Nacogdoches. He retired from KVUE in 2019 to pursue new career opportunities. One of his sports history media adventures is

“Stories Inside the Man Cave”.

TLSN is lucky if we can produce 10 Longhorn oral history podcasts a year. Shawn has produced 450 podcasts in four years, an incredible accomplishment that reflects his passion for sharing the stories of collegiate and professional sports teams and sports personalities.

A special 55th edition in honor of the Buffalo #BillsMafia and Longhorn for Life, Aaron Williams.
 
The former McNeil High School Maverick and DBU great played six great years for the Buffalo Bills. Multiple injuries forced him into retirement, but Williams remains a loyal Buffalo Bill and member of the Bills Mafia fan base.
 
Williams is elated that his Bills are playing in the AFC Championship game this weekend. He discussed the rabid fan base that is the Bills Mafia and paid tribute to one of the legendary late fans, Pancho Billa.
The former Longhorn defensive back great also offered his take on new Texas head coach, Steve Sarkisian, and some insight on the program itself.

Some walk-ons make the team, a select few are now enshrined in school, regional, and National Halls of Honor and Halls of Fame for excelling in their sports, but Most walk-ons don’t make the team.

Thanks to a TLSN Facebook subscriber, Marcy Johnson, Donny Eckhardt Jr.’s story is now chronicled in the walk-on section of TLSN. Donny shares some wonderful memories of the Texas and Texas A&M games. But what intrigued me most was that he was a walk-on at Texas.
 
My Memories of Texas vs Texas aTm  By Donny Eckhardt

My first memory of attending this game was in 1974 when I was eleven. My mom got us tickets in the end zone. The wind chill factor was 20 degrees, and it was intermittently raining. I only had a white Texas windbreaker. Texas went up 14-0 in the first minute of the game and went on to win 32-3. I refused to leave until the last play.

I also remember the 1977 game in College Station, where Earl Campbell cemented his Heisman with 222 yards rushing and four touchdowns, and I was in the lower level in that magical moment when Ricky Williams broke the All-Time NCAA career rushing record in 1998 with 259 rushing yards. A patient gave me tickets to the 1999 game in College Station after the bonfire tragedy, and I sat on the front row behind the Aggie bench; every time Texas made a mistake, the TV camera panned in on me. I think we were all pulling for the Aggies that year; they won.

The most important memory to me was in 1982. I had a decent high school football career at Spring Branch, where I led district 17-5A in rushing my senior year, but I did not have the speed to get heavily recruited; I did turn down the Air Force Academy on signing day. Like many Texas boys, I dreamed of playing for the Longhorns. In March of that year, Coach McWilliams invited me to come up to Austin and have a talk. They asked me to walk on to the football team, and since I was already accepted and planning to study premed, I wholeheartedly accepted the invitation.

August training camp started, and we had four freshman running backs: Anthony Bryarly from Newton, Mike January from Lake Charles, Louisiana, the father of current Longhorn DT, Alex January, Jimmy McDavid from Memphis Boys Academy, and me. My first day was not very good; I tripped over the dummies in the gauntlet drill, I had no idea how to run the ropes, and when practice ended, I told Coach Thompson I wanted to stay after and practice what I did wrong, he asked me, “which part?” I got a little better, and just before the season started, they moved Jimmy and me out of the walk-on locker room and into the varsity locker room.

Texas had a pretty good year in 1982. We finished 13th in the country and went 9-3, with our only SWC loss to Seniors Eric Dickerson and Craig James, and the best team money could buy at SMU. I spent most of my practices on the scout team, trying to imitate those guys.
The 1982 game was played on Thanksgiving Day, one of the few times it was not televised. It was a relatively cold 49 degrees with light rain. Texas was led by 1,000-yard rusher Darryl Clark, who had 16 carries for 137 yards. The designated Touchdown machine, Ervin Davis, scored three touchdowns and added 70 yards rushing. To demonstrate how the game has changed, Texas quarterbacks Todd Dodge and Robert Brewer were a combined 6/10 for 145 yards passing.

At 8 minutes left in the fourth quarter, fellow Spring Branch Bear Mike Luck scored on an 8-yard run and made it 53-10 Texas. I was wisely standing near Coach Fred Akers, and he looked at me and said, “Donny, when we get the ball back, you’re in at fullback.” Wouldn’t you know it, the Aggies, led by Gary Kubiak, went on an 11-play, 56-yard drive that took seven minutes and scored with 47 seconds left in the game, but that still left me 40 seconds to play.

I went in. The Longhorns had Danny Akers at quarterback, Michael (Hound) Brown from Lake Highlands at tailback, and Donny Eckhardt at fullback. The call was 71, a fullback lead over the left guard. Longtime NFL Lineman Adam Schreiber was the left guard; he took his man out of the hole, which left me and my 188 pounds in an Oklahoma drill with an Aggie All-American linebacker. I lost; they tackled Hound for a 1-yard gain. We had time for one more play, and Coach Akers yelled at Danny to run whatever he wanted. I lobbied in the huddle to get the ball, but Danny called a sweep, which also went for no gain. Texas celebrated a 53-16 win against the Aggies in Jackie Sherrill’s first year, and I achieved my dream of playing for Texas.

This game is so important to the people in this state, and I am so glad we get to watch these teams square off tonight. Hook ‘Em Horns!!!
 
 
Below are a few Longhorn Walk-ons of the many that TLSN has chronicled through the years. Tell the NCAA not to eliminate  Walk-ons from the fabric of collegiate sports. 

Denton Cooley wanted to be a jock, not a doctor in his younger years. Fortunately, the confused younger Cooley at Texas discovered the heart and became one of the most esteemed surgeons in the world.
 
Denton was a 6-4 walk-on center in 1939 and played an important role in winning the SWC championship and participating in the NCAA basketball tournament.
 
There were no flights to Madison Square Garden, so the team hopped on a train to play Manhattan College. The Horns won. The next day they played in Temple in Philadelphia and lost.
The Horns started the NCAA playoffs heading by train to San Francisco. Coach Gray noticed that Cooley was in the dining car eating buckwheat pancakes. Gray looked at Denton and said, “No buckwheat for you, Buckwheat!” The name stuck for the rest of his years at Texas.


The U.S. Rowing team names former Longhorn Ruth Stiver to its roster for the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Stiver, a first-time National Team member, was Texas’ first-ever Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) selection. She was a walk on in 2000.

From 1967 through 1970, three African Americans walked on at Texas: E.A. Curry, Robinson Parsons, and Talmadge Blewitt. E.A. Curry was a teammate on the 1967 freshman team.

Over the past five decades, I have frequently thought about E.A. Curry. Remorse fills me when I reflect on the numerous challenges this admirable young man and talented athlete faced but could not overcome. I would cherish the opportunity to see him again and extend a handshake of respect for his efforts to join the team in 1967. He is in the top row, third from the left on the freshman team.

When The Horns Hooked 42 Straight

It was quite a damn feat, this Texas-sized home winnin’ streak.  For those who know history, it stretched from when LBJ resided in the White House through the week in which Jimmy Carter was elected to the oval office.  More than eight full years.  That’s dog years in football seasons, amigo.
 
It spanned from Oct. 5, 1968 to Nov. 6, 1976.
 
Think about it.  The remarkable string of Texas W’s included the last four home games of one season, all home games the next seven years, then the first two of another. Forty-two straight victories. 

Two national championships.  Six straight SWC titles with Cotton Bowls plus two other bowl teams and a shared conference crown. 
 
Texas had been mashing foes by ungodly margins for two years when UCLA came to town in early October 1970 to challenge the top-ranked defending national champs.  Twenty-two straight wins now, ten of them at home, sweet Memorial Stadium.  Uncharacteristically for early autumn, it was a day game.  Major renovations were underway, with an upper deck and new press box under construction.  Lights out, in more ways than one. 
 
Highlights at home in ’72 included a three-touchdown butt-kicking of #17 Arkansas in a nighttime downpour and a 38-3 laugher over hapless A&M.  It was UT’s fourth straight 5-0 worksheet in Austin.  The Horns would go on to beat Bama in the Cotton Bowl and finish third in the national rankings.

The ’73 Horns again went unbeaten in SWC play, chalking up a sixth straight championship.  In five home games, Texas outscored oopponents by a 43-7 average.  
 
The ’75 season marked the first time for the Longhorns to host six, not five, home games.  The wishbone, operated by third-year QB Marty Akins, was in high gear with soph FB Earl Campbell alternately running over and past opponents.  Texas averaged 50 points per game in Austin demolition derby matches with Colorado State, Texas Tech and Utah State.  The Horns wrecked Rice, Baylor and TCU in their remaining home games, en route to a shared SWC title and a comeback victory over Colorado in Houston’s Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl.

Cade McCrary is the last man who touched the football before Justin Tucker temporarily ended the Longhorns’ series with Texas A&M.


McCary was a walk-on Longhorn receiver and former receiver who helped lead Lake Travis High School to back-to-back state championships under then-head coach Chad Morris. And he was one of Garrett Gilbert’s top targets as a Lake Travis Cavalier.

McCrary received multiple scholarship offers out of high school but decided to sign with Texas as a preferred walk-on. He discovered his best path would be as a holder for Texas field goal attempts. After redshirting in 2009, McCrary became the full-time holder and special teams member in 2010. He would do so through the 2013 season as a fifth-year senior.

McCrary’s ties to Texas included his dad, Hardee McCrary who was a member of Mack Brown’s original staff at Texas in 1998.

Cade’s most memorable hold occurred on the final play at Kyle Field at Texas A&M when McCrary successfully received the snap and Justin Tucker booted it through the uprights as time expired to defeat the Aggies, 27-25.

Afterwards, the Longhorns’ celebration included McCrary tackling Tucker near the Texas sidelines before a celebratory dogpile occurred with both Tucker and McCrary on the bottom of said dogpile.

That monumental Texas win over the Aggies was significant mainly because UT earned bragging rights for 13 seasons. Texas A&M bolted from the Big 12 Conference to the SEC in 2012.

The two rivals will meet for the 119th time and renew their rivalry Saturday night in College Station..

Ramonce Taylor

The boys shifted to an inspirational interview with former Texas Longhorn football great Ramonce Taylor. The native of Belton, TX, described his roles on the great 2004 and 2005 Longhorn teams and his win of the national title against USC in January 2006.

Taylor told the stories about the amazing, strong leadership on those teams namely Vince Young.

Taylor experienced a dark time in his life, one incident that ultimately ended his football career. After spending some time behind bars, Taylor eventually righted his life on his own and became a leader of young men. He uses his story to influence and guide young men and be a positive role model in their lives.

Taylor refers to that period of time as a “dark road,” but he never lost focus or fought to find his calling. His calling is making an impact on young minds and young football talent through his faith.

Ramonce offered his opinion on why the Longhorns and Aggies aren’t playing tackle football anymore, but he said that rivalry must return.

Jay Boulware

Boulware is a lifelong Longhorn who was an offensive lineman for Texas, part of the 1991 recruiting class. A heart condition cut his playing career short after two seasons. That’s when Boulware began his coaching career as a student assistant and later became a graduate assistant. He helped coach the Texas teams that captured the final Southwest Conference title and the first Big 12 championship in 1996.

Boulware began his career full-time and made nine stops along the way before accepting an opportunity from Tom Herman to become a co-head coach, special teams coordinator, and tight ends coach.

Prior to Texas, Boulware was hired by Bob Stoops at Oklahoma from Auburn, where he won a national title. He earned several Big 12 title rings and led the Sooners to the College Football Playoff twice.

Aaron Williams

A special 55th edition in honor of the Buffalo #BillsMafia and Longhorn for Life, Aaron Williams.

The former McNeil High School Maverick and DBU great played six great years for the Buffalo Bills. Multiple injuries forced him into retirement, but Williams remains a loyal Buffalo Bill and member of the Bills Mafia fan base.

Williams is elated that his Bills are playing in the AFC Championship game this weekend. He discussed the rabid fan base that is the Bills Mafia and paid tribute to one of the legendary late fans, Pancho Billa.

The former Longhorn defensive back great also offered his take on new Texas head coach, Steve Sarkisian, and some insight on the program itself.

Zeke and Zonk

Two of the best to ever wear a Texas Longhorns baseball uniform entered the Man Cave. This was Greg Swindell’s (Zeke)  second appearance, but first with Keith Moreland (Zonk).

Both Zeke and Zonk have had their jerseys retired at UT and both had storied careers in Major League Baseball and both are broadcasters for the ESPN family including The Longhorn Network.

The conversation began with their takes and opinions on the Texas Longhorns loaded roster and the prospects of UT returning to Omaha for the College World Series. 

Both Moreland and Swindell played for legendary Texas head baseball coach, Cliff Gustafson. Moreland played on three College World Series teams, winning it all in 1975. 
Swindell played on a pair of CWS teams in 1984 and 1985.

The stories from both are priceless, especially to those who are baseball purists and Texas Longhorn baseball fanatics. 

Moreland described what it was like playing at Disch-Falk Field’s predecessor, Clark Field and it’s unique limestone hill in the outfield, Billy Goat Hill. 

These Longhorn legends discussed the issue of baseball’s Hall of Fame not having any new inductees voted in this year and how the game can improve its marketing and interest in American youth.

The longest first segment in Stories Inside the Man Cave Podcast history was recorded mainly because of Ty Harrington.

The Longhorn for life baseball fan favorite and winningest head baseball coach in Texas State University history is enjoying the retired life and spending more time as a dad.

Harrington’s stories are epic from his playing and coaching days.

Javan Felix

Javan Felix was a talented point guard for the Texas Longhorns from 2012 to 2016. He was known for his excellent three-point shooting and playmaking abilities1. During his time at Texas, Felix started in his first two seasons and became a key player for the team. He averaged 11.6 points per game as a sophomore and 13.7 points per game as a junior.
One of his most memorable moments came in December 2015 when he hit the game-winning jump shot at the buzzer in an upset victory over No. 3 North Carolina, scoring a game-high 25 points. Felix was named the Big 12 Player of the Week and the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week for his performance.

During segment 1, an interview with a UT men’s basketball fan favorite, former Texas point guard, Javan Felix.

The NOLA native finished his career at Texas with a 3-point shooting percentage of 35%. Felix offered his take on Shaka Smart stepping down to accept the head coaching opportunity at Marquette.

Shaka was Felix’s head coach at Texas for his senior season which was Smart’s 1st season as UT’s head coach.

Felix was recruited by and signed by former Texas head coach, Rick Barnes. Javan played his first 3 seasons at Texas for Barnes.

Felix’s story is inspiring and motivating. He and his family were forced to evacuate their home in New Orleans to Atlanta prior to Hurricane Katrina. Javan talked about growing up in NOLA and always being prepared for hurricane season.

He and his family have a deeply rooted faith and are a tight-knit family. Felix discussed his upbringing and the support he received en route to graduating from the University of

Brooks Kieschnick

Texas Longhorn baseball legend, Brooks Kieschnick joined the boys for segment one.

Kieschnick is perhaps the most versatile utility player in college baseball history, definitely in Texas baseball history.

During his career at UT, he achieved the following in three seasons before being selected 10th overall in the 1993 June Amateur Draft:

*43 career homers
*34-8 record as a pitcher with a career 3.05 ERA
*played for Coach Gus
*Named the winner of the Dick Howser Award twice, college baseball’s Heisman Trophy

The Corpus Christi Carroll High School graduate now resides in Alamo Heights, outside of San Antonio, with his wife, daughter, and son.

He is currently the CEO of his company which delivers surgical devices.

Kieschnick discussed how tough it was during his Major League Baseball career due to not having a true position.

He talked about the pride he has for having played for the legend, Coach Gus.

Kieschnick’s favorite roles and positions in life have been husband and dad.

Brooks also talked about the sadness of losing his mom recently. Django Walker, son of the late Texas musician Jerry Jeff Walker, wrote a song about Brooks’ mom and she was able to hear it before she passed away.

Kirk Dressendorfer pitched for Texas during the 1988-90 seasons and produced the following significant statistics:

Coach Bob Shipley

Yes, that Shipley. The patriarch of the royal Texas football family which produced the Texas Longhorn receivers: Jordan and Jaxon.

Bob Shipley “officially” retired from the University of Texas football staff three days prior to the recording of this podcast.

Adrian Colbert

Former Texas Longhorn defensive back Adrian Colbert took some time out of his hectic schedule to tell his inspiring story.

Colbert finished his college football career as a Miami Hurricane, where he played for former UT defensive coordinator, Manny Diaz. Colbert changed NFL homes; he recently signed with the New England Patriots.

During his time as a Longhorn, Colbert never truly found his role, and he admitted to experiencing depression and anger. But, he is a deeply rooted Longhorn for life and takes great pride in that.

He searched for a fresh start and decided to transfer to Miami (FL). That move was exactly what Colbert needed. He shined and was selected in the 7th round of the NFL Draft in 2017 and remains in the NFL. Colbert is happier and wiser and wants to positively impact other’s lives.

Butch Hadnot

Hadnot delivered some entertaining stories about his upbringing in East Texas and the resurgent 1990 Texas football season called, the Shock the Nation Tour. A freshman season in which Hadnot rushed for 500+ yards and contributed to UT’s 1st conference championship since 1983 that season. Only to experience an embarrassing frigid morning at the Cotton Bowl against “The U”, the Miami Hurricanes.
A game if Texas would’ve won, the Longhorns may have captured the national championship.
Butch experienced some drama after his sophomore season. A misunderstanding about the reasons why he was on the Texas A&M campus, dropping off friends of his who played on the Aggie football team. It was portrayed as he was inquiring about transferring to Texas A&M.
According to Hadnot, that was not the truth.
Hadnot experienced some academic issues which is why he took summer classes in 1992 after John Mackovic was hired to succeed David McWilliams. Hadnot signed with the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts, then found out he was reinstated academically with UT. But, it was too late to continue playing college football due to signing to play professionally. 
Butch offered his take on the Name, Image, & likeness and how that would’ve benefitted himself and student-athletes during his era.
Hadnot’s story included becoming a mentor to youth and youth sports all while returning to finish his degree at UT.

The retired football coach, who is pursuing his Master’s degree, discussed his entire Red River Rivalry experience as a player.
In 1999, Cavil stepped up in the locker room at halftime of 1999 Bob Stoops’ 1st season at OU and said, “Let’s Go Right There Now!”. Texas rallied back to win 38-28.

The son of Darrell K. Royal’s defensive coordinator, Mike Campbell, Tom played a significant role in UT’s 1969 national championship.

The Bo Davis cell phone video on the team bus this past season was discussed at length. Harris said that would’ve never happened during his era at Texas. The player-driven leadership would not have allowed it, and if someone had, that individual would’ve been dealt with by the team and no longer part of the “family” and team.

Kris Clack is a basketball legend in Austin, TX. He was the first McDonald’s All-American from ATX after a storied career at Anderson High School, Austin, Texas, in which he led the Trojans to back-to-back appearances in the 4A state title game.
In fact, Clack had his jersey retired at Anderson High School, Austin, Texas
He played four seasons for the Texas Longhorns, scoring 1592 points and grabbing 771 rebounds. Clack was selected 55th overall in the 1999 NBA Draft. He spent most of his professional career overseas before wrapping up his career in the NBA Developmental League.

Tom Penders is responsible for building the foundation for what Texas Men’s Basketball has become. Hired in 1988, Penders instantly resurrected the Longhorns program with an up-tempo style referred to as the “Runnin’ Horns,” leading Texas to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade. 

Penders told some stories about how he and his wife Susie marketed the program across Austin when they arrived. Attendance at the Erwin Center reflected that, a drastic increase.

In fact, 8 of 10 Penders’ coached Texas teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament. He concluded his career as a college basketball coach with 648 wins and was recently inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame

The pride of Jarrell, Texas, was once the top gun pitcher for the proud Texas Longhorns baseball program. In 2017, the Los Angeles Dodgers selected Morgan Cooper 62nd overall.
Cooper praised former Texas Longhorns pitching coach Skip Johnson, who is now the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners baseball program, for recruiting him to Texas.
Morgan finished his career as a Longhorn with 210 strikeouts.
During his time as a Longhorn, Cooper developed a strong relationship with a young man from his hometown, Jarrell, named Kooper Hernandez. Hernandez battled osteosarcoma. After losing a leg to cancer and conquering it, he is now known as Super Kooper.

Haney played on one College World Series team for Texas in 1987.  He was a teammate of Man Cave alumni Greg Swindell & Ty Harrington
The son of the only 4-time all-American at Sam Houston State University played over a decade professionally with four different franchises, including the Cubs. 
During segment one, we discussed his special moments playing for UT’s legendary baseball coach, Coach Cliff Gustafson, and his memories of playing in Omaha. We also discussed his growing up with accomplished baseball talents, his dad, and his older brother. 
In segment two, Haney offered his take on the current Texas Longhorns, who are on a new winning streak. We also discussed the future of baseball and the global development of the game.

Chris Nelson

In segment one, you’ll get to know Chris on a deep level and learn that he considered transferring from Texas before his senior season, which ended with the Sugar Bowl win over Georgia. 
And gave a player’s perspective on the pressure of playing for Texas. He even added that he feels the program is so close to flipping to the program it once was.
A Longhorn fan favorite, Nelson talked about the beginnings of the Nelly Rub, when he would celebrate a big tackle or play by rubbing his belly. Something former Texas DE/LB Breckyn Hager helped Nelson with. 
In segment two, Chris offered his opinion on Quinn Ewers named the current Longhorns QB1.
And since he’s a Florida native and favored the Florida Gators program before signing with Texas, Nelson delivered his take on Kayce Smith’s comical take on Florida’s stadium, “The Swamp,” on Barstool Sports’ podcast, Unnecessary Roughness.
Nelson, a native of Dundee, Florida, was recruited by former Texas Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong. He finished his career as a Longhorn, having played in 45 games, made 70 solo tackles, 109 total tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 quarterback sacks.
Nelson played in the NFL, Canada, and currently for the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL.
His most important role is dad to his two young kids and husband.

Players for Coach Gus talk about his incredible life

The Texas Longhorn baseball coaching legend, Cliff Gustafson passed away at age 91. 

Three of his former players from the 1980s: Calvin Schiraldi, Ty Harrington, and Greg Swindell all took time out of their evening to discuss their beloved coach. 

Coach Gus won 1466 games at Texas, won 2 national titles, led the Longhorns baseball program to 17 CWS trips to Omaha, and captured 22 SWC championships. 

But, it was the man we call, “Gus” who impacted all of his players included Schiraldi, Harrington, and Swindell. It became emtional somewhat as expected. 

The humorous side to Coach Gus including his habitual lunches: peanut butter & honey sandwiches, Lay’s potato chips, and powdered iced tea was discussed at length.

Jermichael Finley

Jermichael Finley was a multi-sport star in East Texas at Diboll High School, just south of Lufkin, TX.
From Diboll to Austin, where he starred as a tight for Mack Brown. Finley was selected in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers and became a fan favorite. Jermichael’s career was cut short by a major injury.
Since then, Finley created and launched his brand and personal athletic training for young football talents, #ElevaTEU.
In fact, Jermichael’s ElevaTEU is headed to Austin for a football/athletic training camp at Westlake High School on Friday, July 21st from 9 AM-4 PM.

In 1988 I was a walk on DT for Texas. We were not on the travel squad for OU game. Instead we were given tickets in the Texas section.

There was a group of older gentlemen sitting behind us and all wearing burnt orange. We struck up a conversation with them during timeouts, injuries, etc…the man sitting to my upper right excused himself and went down beneath the stadium.

When he returned, four concession workers followed him, carrying a smorgasbord of hot dogs, corn dogs, peanuts, Hershey bars, and chips.

Dr. Cooley knew how to treat economically disadvantaged walk-on athletes.
