Greg or Tyres
Here are my two options, along with before-and-after photos. Greg’s story is deeply moving and has profoundly touched my heart forever. His dilemma was the primary reason Jim, Benny, and I decided to move forward with the TLSN mission to support former student-athletes who have fallen through society’s safety nets. However, since Greg’s donations were raised by DKR players, using his before-and-after photos may somewhat dilute the TLSN message.
Conversely, the TLSN mission is fully engaged with Tyres, whose story is deeply embedded in the history of Longhorn sports. Coach Mack Brown and many influential Longhorns raised funds to support Tyres after his car accident. However, as years passed, donations dwindled, and Tyres was left to fight the battle alone. Over the past 20 years, he has spent half of his time in a hospital bed. He reached out to TLSN for help, and we fulfilled our mission.
I believe that Alcalde wrote a story about Tyres many years ago, but I could be mistaken.
When the Houston Touchdown Club honored him, we picked him up in a handicap van with a lift. It was the first time in nine years that he attended a social event. All other times he left the house, he was going to the hospital. After the luncheon, we took him to a bar where he ordered a Bloody Mary. All eight of us at the table smiled joyfully, watching the alcohol enhance his wonderful personality.
