Fan Michael Olivarri shares story about John Hagy

Michael Olivarri

I played high school football with John Hagy at John Marshall High School in San Antonio. He was a great player.

Here’s a story from high school.

We finished track practice one day and got the bright idea to move the high jump mats over next to the bleachers. Hagy, me, and three other classmates took turns going to the top of the bleachers, climbing the rail, and jumping off, landing on the high jump mats below. It was about an easy 30-foot drop.

We were at the top of the bleachers on our 5th or 6th go around when we heard Coach Faught yelling from the field house, “Hagy, Haas, Friedland, Ovalle, Olivarri!!!! What the hell are you doing?! Get your asses off that got dang bleacher right now!”

So, we all went over the rail one last time.

My 2 favorite Longhorns wore #17 at Texas. John Hagy and Dicker the kicker.

1964 Longhorn football player Garry Brown

Garry Brown’s story inspires me because it highlights the “rest of the story” about playing sports at Texas and honors all athletes, not just the starters. Garry never saw playing time or even made the traveling team until one magical moment that is forever part of Longhorn sports history. His commitment to Texas embodies the…
