Brad Elder is a two time All American.

Coach Field lands some great recruits his first year as the Head Coach including David Gossett, John Klauk, Russell Surber , Matt Brost , and Culley Barragan. All would be great leaders for the Horns in the future. While Jimmy Clayton only signed one non-Texan in 16 years, Coach Field signed 3 from out-of-state his first year. Gossett and Klauk were ranked 1 and 2 on the Junior circuit.

1998- 1999 Coach John Fields - team finished 9th at the Ncaa tournament.

Team wins 2 tournaments and Gossett is medalist in 4.

Matt Brost is the medalist in Hawaii

David Gossett is an All-American in 1999 and 2000 and the NCAA freshman of the year. He was the only freshman who made the first team. He is the medalist in three tournaments between 1998 and 1999. He won the Red River Classic shooting a tournament record 17 under par. Tiger Woods is the only collegiate golfer with a faster start than David Gossett. The Red River victory vaulted Texas to #1 in the nation.

David Gossett was the Big 12 Conference medalist and U.S. Amateur Champion in 1999. David chose Texas because of the Horn’s past success on the pro circuit. Leonard, Crenshaw, Brooks, Kite all won major pro tournaments.

On January 29, 1999, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced that Jimmy Clayton would be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

1999- 2000 Coach John Fields first at regionals and 5th at the ncaa tournament

David Gosset tied an NCAA record with a 9 under par 63 and his teammate J.J. Wall shot a 65 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Golf is not like other team sports. Coach Fields can’t give the ball to the best player to win the game. Golf has no timeouts, and huddles to say let’s give the ball to David Gosset to win the game. In a true sense in golf, the best player can’t win for the team. He needs help and in 2000 those players included Barragan, Brost, Huffman, Klauk, and McEntire.

Texas won the NCAA Central regional and was in first place after the first day of play in the national championship tournament. Matt Brost led the way with a 6 under on Saturday and Gosset and Brost finished in the top 6 for best scores.
