2001 to 2016- Coach Jerritt Elliott

Coach Jerritt Elliot – The Bloom is on!

Coach was the right hire at the right time in Longhorn Volleyball history.

His decision to incorporate the best from the past into the best of the present helped build a dynasty.

  • six NCAA Championship appearances (2009, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2020 and 2022)

    Elliott’s sustained success allowed him to become the program’s winningest head coach, surpassing Mick Haley’s 522 wins at Texas from 1980-96.

· Among most prolific players in UT history

· 1995 National Freshman of the Year

· Earned All-America, all-conference, and NCAA all-regional honors all four years at UT

· Named to Big 12 “10th Anniversary Team” in 2005

· Was UT’s all-time leader in kills, attacks and digs

· Led team to 1997 Big 12 title and 1995 NCAA runner-up finish

· 2000 USA Olympic team member

2001- 17-14 Coach Jerritt Elliott NCAA Second Round

Coach Elliott is hired away from USC. He was the interim coach for Mick Haley while he coached the 2000 Olympic team. Topic sets a single match “kill” record with 34. Horns are 8th in the conference received a bid to the NCAA championship.

Bethany Howden was a Freshman All-American.  She was the first Texas freshman to ever record 400 kills and 100 blocks in a season.

2002- 23-9 Coach Jerritt Elliott NCAA 2nd Round

2002 –   LaTonya was the only Longhorn to start every match this year.  Texas was 15th in the nation in home attendance with an average of 1,503 fans.  

The Setter


The “setter” by Daily Texan staff writer Darren W. Dummit. .  – “It’s the quarterback, the point guard, and the pitcher rolled into one- with prerequisites consisting of the size to block outside hitters, the speed to retrieve errant passes, and the smarts to engineer an effective offensive game plan.” Caron Blotch played the setter role in 2002.  At Texas 7 of the last nine setters achieved All-American status. 

The Horns were 17-0 winning the first round of the Regional NCAA Tournament but lost to 10th seeded Arizona in the second round.  Texas ended the season in 4th place in the Big 12.

Texas was 10-1 against in-state schools.  Texas ended Big 12 league play in 4th place.  Hahn, Howden and Topic made first team All-Big 12.   Mira Topic was the first freshman to collect 500 kills during the regular season.

2003-2004 – 15-14 Coach Jerritt Elliott

 


The 2003 recruiting class was ranked 2nd to Stanford. It was the second  top two class for Coach Elliott.  

Horns do not make the NCAA tournament.  The team was plagued with injuries, family emergencies, and inconsistency.   Texas had a tough time winning close games.  

Bethany Howden joins Erin Aldrich, Dee Sance, Kathy Tilson, and Mira Topic with 30 or more kills in a match.

Brandy Magee was a stabilizing influence on the team leading in team blocks and hitting efficiency.  

Whitney Garvens was selected to the  first-team Academic All-Big 12 .

Mira Topic and Jenny Andrew played every point of all 105 games in 2003.  

Texas had the 3rd tallest team in collegiate volleyball behind Louisville and Illinois.  

 

 

2004 – 2005- 26-5 Coach Jerritt Elliott – Sweet 16

Horns started the season with a record of 24-0 and ranked #9.  

Horns were a #6 seed at the NCAA tournament and made the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1998.  Topic closed her career with a record of 2,116 kills and, for a season, 593 kills, replacing Dee Sance’s records.

Elliott was coach of the year and 2 Horns – Topic and Howden- made first-team all-Big 12.  

Mira Topic holds the Longhorn career record for kills (2,226), service aces (185), and points (2468. She holds the season record for points (672). 

Christian and Holloway both left high school early and roomed together at Texas. Coach Elliott said both were internally motivated to succeed.

2005 – 2006- 24-5 Coach Jerritt Elliott NCAA second round

Kiley Hall showed strength in defense and offense—unusual qualities in a volleyball player. volleyball.

Leticia Armstrong is the most improved and a great outside hitter. The volleyball team’s blocking showed the most improvement over the previous year. After Longhorn basketball player Heather Schreiber completed her collegiate basketball career at Texas, she joined volleyball for one semester. She was the only senior on the team. Texas has the second tallest team in the nation.

Texas beats Nebraska for the first time since 1999.  Ranked as #7 Texas loses to Hawaii in NCAA regional play. Texas won 6 of 9 against ranked teams.


Heather Schreiber, a basketball All-American, stepped off the basketball court and onto the volleyball court.

An average of 2,185 fans per match was the best attendance record since 1996.  

Texas was 11-1 at home. Since 2003 Texas won 26 of 28 at home.  Demitria Sance and Mira  Topic made the all-decade team in the Big12.

Michelle Moriarty, Dariam Acevedo, and Jenny Andrew were all selected to the  Big 12 Academic team.   

2006 – 2007- 24-7 Coach Jerritt Elliott -NCAA regional final

The Horns ended the season ranked #7. Their highest since 1988. Three players make the Academic All-Big 12 .

Destinee Hooker

Destinee was also the NCAA national champion in the high jump.

Ashley Engle was the Big 12 Freshman of the year and made the first team Big 12. Ashley against Santa Clara and Penn State gave it all she had to help the Longhorns win the national championship tallying 41 kills and 21 digs and being named to the all-tournament team, but the team fell short to Penn State.

2007 – 2008 – 27-4 Coach Jerritt Elliott Big 12 champion- ncaa regional final

The Horns only lost to Penn State and Nebraska during the regular season and won the Big 12 tournament.  Destinee Hooker was a leader in kills and points per game.  The team entered the NCAA Tournament and ranked #6 in the nation.  This was Texas’s 24th appearance in the NCAA tournament.

The Horns put together a 23-match winning streak before USC beat the Horns in NCAA regional play.  

Texas claimed 7 of 12  of the Big 12 Player of the week awards. It was the first time in Big 12 history that five players from one school earned this honor in the same season.    

 Paolini broke the UT single-season hitting percentage.

Texas snapped Nebraska’s winning streak sweeping the Huskers for the first time since 1997

Michelle Moriart claimed top sport on the career assists, Brandy Magee set the career record hitting percentage of .373.   Juliann Faucett, Lauren Polini, and Destinee Hooker were invited to the U.S. volleyball Olympics try-outs.   

Michelle Moriarty holds the career record for assists (5819)and she was team Academic MVP in 2006.

2008 – 29-4 Coach Jerritt Elliott- Final 4 and Big 12 Champion

The Horns reache the NCAA semi-final for the first time in 3 years. It was the most wins in a season since 1993.  Won the Big 12 beating 3rd ranked Nebraska.   Paolini, Engle, and Hooker were All-Americans.  Lost to Stanford in the Semifinals

For the first time in Horn volleyball history Texas placed three players on the All-American list – Paolini, Engle, and Hooker.    Hooker is named Big 12 Female athlete of the year.

 Doris, Faucette, Kisner, and Paolini made the first team All-Academic Big 12 team.

Rachel Adams holds the career Longhorn record for hitting percentage (.431)

Heather Kisner holds the Longhorn season record for digs (488)

2009- 29-2 Coach Jerritt Elliott runner-up to national champion Penn State

For the first time since 1995, the Horns advanced to the NCAA Championship finals against Penn State but lost. Still, they wound their 3rd Big 12 title and their second trip to the final 4. Destinee Hooker, Heather Kisner, and Ashley Engle led the team. The senior accumulated a 109-17 record in 4 years and played in 19 NCAA matches. Texas eliminated Purdue in the regionals. Faucette was named to the NCAA Championship all-tournament for the second year in a row.

It is the best class in percentage wins and number of NCAA matches in UT history.

This season almost ended in a great fashion but up 2 games to 0 against Penn State in the finals, the Horns lose the next 3 sets and the national championship.

Destinee Hooker  is a finalist for the Honda Award 2008 and 2009


2009 Volleyball Back row- Roberson, Faucette, Webster, Doris,Engle, Hooker, Adams- front- Yogi, Kisner, Kocher, McNeal, Arenas

Destinee Hooker was a two sports star- track and volleyball. It is in the genes. Her sister, Marshevet, won the national championship in track at Texas. In fact, Destinee and Marshevet were on the 2006 track team that won the indoor national championship. In 2007, Destinee was a national leader in kills and points per game.

 

2010- 27-6 Coach Jerritt Elliott final 4

Horns of Hope game against Missouri raised awareness of breast cancer.

The volleyball team qualified for the 4th NCAA appearance in regionals. Horns decimate the Aggies in tournament play followed by a close victory over Nebraska and a challenge by the Minnesota Gophers. Texas made it to the finals but loss to Penn State.

2012 – 29-4 Coach Jerritt Elliott national champions

The seeded for the NCAA was 1- Penn State, 2- Stanford, 3-Texas. In the Elite 8 Texas played against past Longhorn head coach Mick Haley’s USC team that had already won two national championships. The win catapulted the Horns to their 8th final 4 trip to play Michigan and then Oregon.

Hall of Honor Inductee Bailey Webster

Baily Webster is a three-time First Team All-American and the 2012 NCAA Championship Most Outstanding Player, Bailey Webster helped bring a national title back to Texas and place herself among Texas Volleyball’s all-time greats. In 2012 she was a First Team All-American. Webster also was awarded the 2012 UT Arthur Ashe Jr., Sports Scholar Award and V.F. “Doc” Neuhaus Award honors.

 Eckerman starred as a 6-foot-3 outside hitter at Texas from 2011-14. She earned AVCA All-America accolades four times, including three first-team nods. The Big 12 honored her as its player of the year in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

In 2012, Eckerman helped lead Texas to an NCAA championship. Her 1,662 career kills rank fifth in the UT record books, and only seven Longhorns have served more aces.

2013 Coach Jerritt Elliott NCAA final 4

2013-2014- volleyball – 4000 fans showed up for the Oklahoma – Texas volleyball game. Texas record was 39-3 against O.U., with a 21-1 record at home.

 

 

 

TOPPING THE CHARTS

 

Volleyball- Haley Eckerman led the team with kills and digs.  The Longhorns were 19-0 against the Cyclones in a game the Horns finally won.
