Omaha postcard: Buck Cody

Hello Longhorns Nation,

Seth Johnston put it best a couple of days ago when he said, “spending late June in Omaha never gets old.” We have had such a great time since we arrived, from dinners to practice to games to just goofing around. As I am sure most of you are aware, we have had big-time performances from a number of players, and those of us who have not gotten to cross the white lines are anxiously waiting to follow in their footsteps. We know that every team that gets here has an abundance of ability, and are hoping that all of our preparation, experience, sacrifices, and hard work will separate us from the others. At the same time, we also know that we cannot control baseball, but instead, only our own best efforts. That being the case, I can promise you all only one thing … we will play our hardest for nine innings tomorrow night and win or lose, do the same the next time we are given the opportunity. Until the next time, tune in and Hook’em Horns!!!

Alan Champagne

Unsung heroes in football are frequently members of the offensive line. Texas can boast of an enviable roll call of standout centers, and Alan Champagne is on that list. The native of Lafayette, LA. starred in high school at Houston’s Cypress Creek and signed with Fred Akers a month after only a mishandled Georgia punt separated Texas from a perfect 12-0 record in the centennial year of The University of Texas, 1983.

But times were about to change on the Forty Acres. After redshirting in ’84 when the Steers were ranked number one in early October and slumped to 4-4-1 the rest of the way, Champagne saw highs and lows and a head coaching change in his four varsity years. Champagne was a stalwart on lines that propelled RB Eric Metcalf to three All-SWC seasons.

A Longhorn captain as a senior in ’88, Champagne now flourishes as a businessman in Houston’s vital energy sector. He enjoys life as a husband and dad who can look back on NFL Europe and unrelated travels to global spots untouched by football fever while looking forward to more globe-hopping sojourns.

Champagne took time with TLSN to talk about a variety of topics ranging from walk-off TDs to embarrassing photos and the benefits of a bubbly name.

Texas women win the indoor national championship picking up 4 titles, more than any team in the history of the NCAA track and field championships.

9 Horns were named All-Americans. Karol Davidson won the 800 meters, and Angie Bradburn won the high jump.

Carlette Guidry was the top performer for the meet. Guidry set two school records and is the first woman track star to win two individual events at the NCAA National Championship.

Coach Terry Crawford 1982-1992

Coach Crawford is an expert in human physiology, kinesiology, and running. She wanted her athletes to understand the science of the sport. She was adamant that women in sports should develop from the inside out to be complete individuals and consummate athletes.
