“There is nothing so momentary as a sporting achievement, and nothing so lasting as the memory of it.” Greg Dening

Beth Coblentz has joined the TLSN Board of Directors.

It was during Mickey Haley’s tenure as the Longhorn women’s volleyball coach that players learned how to “spike the moon,” and they have been doing so ever since. One of these Longhorn volleyball pioneers was Beth Coblentz #4 in the 1982 photo below.

TLSN’s goal is to add four more Board members from a pool of former scholarship athletes who participated in either basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, golf, rowing, soccer, or swimming. The present mix of Board members includes two football players, one manager, one trainer, and one volleyball player. Board diversity is the TLSN goal.

In the Navigation tool at the top of the TLSN Website is a section titled “Lost Too Soon”. There are presently ten former student-athletes listed on this page, starting with the demise of William Wasmund in 1911, followed by Nolte McElroy, Reggie Grob, Joe Nobis, Ralph Elliott, Danny Lester, Carl Johnson, Freddie Steinmark, Parker Alford, and Cole Pittman.

Please email williamdale@msn.com information on any other Longhorn student-athlete, trainer, manager, or coach who should be remembered in this section of the History of Longhorn sports. Click on the Cole Pittman link below to read the stories of those “Lost too soon.”

TLSN’s most important mission is granting temporary financial assistance to those who qualify for aid – former student-athletes, trainers, managers, coaches, and their immediate family’s.

Many may be eligible for support but are unaware of the service TLSN provides.

TLSN has an email access problem. 90% of the individuals covered by the TLSN mission are unaware of the service. U.T. for legal and privacy reasons, cannot share, inform, or promote TLSN’s mission with their email base .

The only resolution to this situation starts and ends with each of you. Please reach out to your email list of former student-athletes and ask them to join the TLSN twice-monthly newsletter to celebrate the history of Longhorn sports and to support those who need a Horns Up!

Tyres Dickson has written a thank you letter to each of us. His letter captures the importance of the TLSN mission. I hope you will take a moment and read his heartfelt appreciation for the grant he received from TLSN. Please click on the link below to read.
