Steve Ross and Coach Akers Over the last 4 years great articles from Gaylon Krizak, Barbara Wainscott, Mark McDonald, Ragan Gennusa , Robert Brewer, Rey Moreno, Byrd Baggett, Stewart Keller, Pamela Ferguson, Hub Bechtol, Rodney Page, Amy Goodwin, Tony Crosby, Emory Bellard , and others have shared special historical moments on the TLSN website. TLSN is building bridges to the past that help remind all Longhorns that heritage shapes the present and inspires the future. There is no better vista for story telling than through the eyes of those who are part of a special moment in Longhorn sports history. As a form of introduction for Steve , I am reminded of the movie Wayne’s World and how Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey’s characters reacted when they met their idol Alice Cooper. Their comment “We are not worthy” is priceless, and that it is how I feel about Steve. He has agreed from from time to time to share special moments about his first love – the Texas Longhorns. Steve Ross has been a Longhorn fan since childhood and for the last 40 years professionally as part of the media. (Please see above photo) Years ago Steve wrote an article for Barking Carnival about the 1970 UCLA game with such accurate detail I thought he played in the game. That article and his first article for TLSN website about the 1982 Coach Akers football team are in the Que.

The generosity of Clyde Rabb Littlefield is allowing the Stark Center to establish a new lecture series. Our first Clyde Rabb Littlefield Lecture features Asher Price, author of the highly acclaimed biography, Earl Campbell: Yards After Contact. Using pictures and video, Price will explore Campbell’s historic football career in Tyler, Austin, and as a Houston Oiler. Price will then participate in a moderated Q&A with Department of Kinesiology & Health Education faculty member, Tolga Ozyurtcu. The lecture at the Connally Ballroom in the Texas Exes building begins at 3:30 on October 17 and is free and open to everyone.

While many former Longhorn student athletes, managers, trainers, coaches and their immediate families have been blessed , there are still some of our peers who, through no fault of their own, have suffered a catastrophic event that has devastated them financially. The TLSN mission as a 501 (c) (3) offer those less fortunate who qualify under the TLSN mission a temporary financial safety net.

In the last 18 months TLSN has issued grants to assist a former Longhorn volleyball player whose son was diagnosed with Leukemia, a DKR football player from the 60’s who had throat cancer, and a Mack Brown player from the late 90’s who is confined to a wheel chair for life.

Applicants for help must qualify for assistance. The TLSN Board members are responsible for the qualifying due diligence. If the applicant qualifies , TLSN sends the appropriate forms to the UT Athletic compliance department for approval or rejection. Per UT compliance standards approved applicant must supply receipts such as food, prescription drugs, house payment, car, gas, utilities, and phone for reimbursement. Discretionary expenditures such as movie tickets, concert tickets, and restaurant bills do not qualify.

The present Board of Directors includes Jim Kay (CFO), Benny Pace (Chairman), and Billy Dale( CEO). TLSN wants to increase the number of Board members from 3 to 7 in the next 12 months.
