Tennis, 1969 , Hondo Crouch, and Tex Robertson’s carnival

Top of the Que 09/08/2019 Volume IV Newsletter #22 celebrates Longhorn Swimming Carnivals, the 1969 Longhorn National Championship , admonitions from Tennis Coach Wilmer Allison , and author James Michener’s favorite subject- Hondo Crouch.

All of these stories are in the Que at https://texaslsn.org

The letter below written to the 1973 Longhorn Tennis Freshman class from Coach Wilmer Allison reminds the new Horns they are lower than an amoeba in the Longhorn tennis hierarchy. Letter is from Jim Bayless Longhorn tennis archives.

As the Longhorn nation celebrates the 1969 National Championship football team, please remember that this team was one loss player away from a perfect season. The 1969 national Championship story returns to the Que.

A Quote From Becky Patterson- Hondo’s Daughter -“The Hondo I knew was Like An Indian Scout, Trapper, Hunter, Made Arrowheads , Read The Ground. Played Pranks On Us. We Were His First Audience. We Kids Were All Educated In Culture, The Arts, Private Schools, Even Though We Slept With Raccoons And Wild Foxes He’d Brought Home , Curled Up On Our Pillows.”

Michener writes “Hondo said he was a legend in his own mind.  He is definitely a Texas legend in my mind and in the minds of countless others.”

WET’S ( Working Exes for Texas Swimming) will celebrate Longhorn swimming and diving with many events scheduled in Austin from September 20th through September 22nd . Here is one of the links to the WET’S Site.

The photos below are from a 1941 Carnival produced and directed by Longhorn swim coach Tex Robertson as a way to raise money to support the swim team. During the carnival there is a selection of a “Aqua” Queen, a Beauty Pageant contest, and a Cirque du Soleil performance by Longhorn swimmers.
