Unpredictable Journey: 50 Years of Life and UT Football

If you think you know the ending to the 1969 Texas-Arkansas Shootout, you don’t.

Exactly 50 years ago this spring, the Texas Longhorns reset their annual football date with Arkansas, and were training to make ready to do battle with the Razorbacks. Turns out, the epic collision of gridiron giants Darrell Royal called “The Big Shootout” was only the beginning. What happened afterwards? Plenty.

If all Longhorn student athletes were required to read Beyond the Big Shootout- 50 Years of Football’s Life Lessons a majority would identify with the chapter that Bill Catlett shares with Mark on how an athletes playing time may result in turning wine to vinegar.

There is also a chapter that discusses Glen Halsell, one of the top 5 linebackers to ever play at Texas. This chapter is not only insightful, but it is compelling.  Mark is able to celebrate Glen’s “free spirit” persona while reminding readers that teams can not be built on too many cult personalities.  Writing about Halsell and Maxwell (Glenn’s mirror image from Arkansas), Mark says “They carried themselves with an assertive manner that gave them a don’t-mess- with-me presence, transcending the physical into the mysteries of psychology”.

Many Quotes in the book from Bill Atessis, Tom Campbell, Bill Catlett, Juan Conde, Glen Halsell, Stan Mauldin, Bob McKay, Alan Moravcik, Barry Switzer, Donnie Wigginton, Bill Little, Bill Montgomery, Kevin Sherrington, Dr. Jeff Zapalac, and many Razorbacks. Visit the Que to see more.

Bust of the four national championship quarterbacks (Duke, James, Eddie, and Vince) are looking for a home in either the remodeled North or South sections of DKR stadium. The project is scheduled for completion in two years. On April 23rd, 2019 I met with Jim Nixon and two others to discuss the logistics and funding of this project.

Here is what I was told:

1) This project has been approved at the highest levels of UT Athletics. This has been confirmed.

2) Donors have already paid for the James Street bronze. The image of the sculpt for the James Street bronze is in the que.

3) Jimmy Nixon, who was instrumental in the Earl Campbell bronze, is leading the project. The artist who will complete the project site is at http://bjorgegallery.com/

4) Jimmy is reaching out to all the teammates of the other three national championship quarterbacks for jpeg images to help the artist sculpt the front, back, and side of each honoree’s head. Please check your private archive of photos of Duke, Eddie, and Vince and forward to Williamdale@msn.com.

5) There may or may not be a pillar/column holding the bust. If a pillar column is used Jimmy wants to add the team members names associated with each quarterback to the column.

6) Stayed tuned for more information on this project. As in all concepts, changes, revisions, deletions , and additions will occur.
