2023 Dickie Johnston
Royal made two personal visits to Clovis and assured Johnston he could play both baseball and football at Texas. For a short period Dickie did play both sports, but as great as he was in the state of New Mexico in both sports, he struggled to compete at Texas, but was still honored with two national championship football rings in 1969 and 1970.
Dickie Johnston passed away on May 27, 2023, leaving behind a cherished legacy in high school sports and a great life filled with special moments shared as a friend of the Rolling Stones.
Dickie Johnston (Stroker) has passed away.
Dickie Johnston – HB: 6-0: 190
He is shown in the 1969 national championship team photo. Third row in the middle Jersey #21
Dickie is in the third row. #21 with #74 Randy Stout on one side and #14 Eddie Phillips on the other.
Dickie had many qualities of his best friend, James Street. An easy smile, endless energy, charisma, and a free spirit persona. Like Street, people from all walks of life gravitated to Dickie’s personality and zest for life. However, Dickie was no Opie from the Andy Griffin show; he chose to live life on the fringe where many in the mainstream did not venture. The saying “Rolling Stone gathers no moss.” defines Dickie. Dickie lived life to the fullest as a Rolling Stone, grounded by his many friends.
THE REAL ROLLING STONES
With the Rollingstones, Dickie was in his element. (The photos and comments below were sent to me by some of Dickie’s friends.)
Billy Schott- Fair winds and following seas… Sail on, Stroker…
Sometimes, when the Stones were on tour, the band bought Dickie an airline ticket so he could join them. Sometimes he was gone for a month .
The famous horseshoe aficionado Dan Adams shares a story about Dickie. Those are very true words, Billy. No question that he was a unique person. I saw him a few times over the years in Hawaii, Austin, and New Mexico. No matter the place or situation, his smile and inner glow were always contagious.
Mick and Dickie
Dan says, “Sometime in the late 70s Dickie mailed a Christmas card to my parents’ house. On the card was a photo of Dickie standing with Mick Jagger. Jagger was dressed in drag, wearing an Asian dress and a black wig. The card simply said ” it’s only rock and roll. Merry Christmas.” …… my mother’s only comment was ” Hmm, I hate to say it, but Dickie’s Asian girlfriend is not very attractive”.
Price Ebert says,
