TLSN interviews Kiki DeAyala

With the most enduring records in UT football history, Kiki DeAyala launches TLSN’s new Q&A series. Kiki fondly remembers teammates and an Aggie QB and offers thoughts on cooking, photography, business by the beach, and The American Dream.

TLSN has created some new venues to celebrate Longhorn sports history as seen through the eyes of those who created it. Kiki DeAyala is first up with his memories of being a part of building the Longhorn brand.

Pass rusher deluxe, Kiki DeAyala owns the Longhorn football records most likely never to be broken. DeAyala, who totaled 22.5 sacks in 1982 and 40.5 career sacks (mostly from his junior and senior seasons), is comparable to Joe DiMaggio’s untouchable 56-game hitting streak. These kinds of marks conjure up visions of an eight-flat 100-meters or a running back with a 6,000-yard season.

The man responsible works happily and resides by the saltwater in Rockport, Texas but still calls Houston “home.” DeAyala is the proud father of three grown children. Natalie, Michael, and Christian hold degrees from Alabama, Ohio U, and Texas A&M, respectively. And Kiki labels his granddaughter, Margot (daughter of Natalie and husband, Andrew), as “too much fun!”

The Sultan of Sacks handled TLSN writer and former professor Larry Carlson’s questions as easily as he shucked blockers back in the day.

Coach Mark Schubert 1990 Longhorn women’s swim team wins the National Championship

Coach Schubert was a member of the USA’s Olympic Swimming Team coaching staff in 1980 (which the USA did not attend), 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004. He was also part of the staff for the 2008 Olympics. In 1997, he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) as an Honor Coach.

The Horns win their 8th national championship by the closest margin in the history of the NCAA. The score is Texas 632 and Stanford 622.5.

The National Championship came down to the 400 freestyle relay. Texas is behind after the first three swimmers, but Fetter came thru, and the Longhorns are national champions. Leigh Ann Fetter is the first woman in the history of swimming to break the 22-second barrier in the 50 freestyle.

1992 All-American defensive back, Lance Gunn, is a three-time All-SWC player and a 1993 NFL draft selection.
