After Texas joins the SEC the Thanksgiving Texas-Aggie game may once again be part of Longhorn Sports History.

Middle school and high school students in the 1960s and early 1970s were the breeding ground for kids looking for Longhorn sports idols.

Larry Carlson, Jenna McEachern, and Billy Schott are perfect examples of how great Longhorn football inspired a lifetime of memories captured in writing about DKR and beyond. Tommy Nobis, Duke Carlisle, Tommy Ford, Jay Arnold, Rosy Leaks, Steve Worster, James Street, Julius Whittier, Lawrence Sampleton, Doug Shankle, and Kenneth Sims either started or maintained Longhorn greatness for three decades.

This newsletter is divided into three parts.

Part I

Professor Carlson shares an article about the Aggie Supper tradition with a notable assist from Jenna McEachern, followed by Larry’s memories of the Thanksgiving games in 1968, 1969, and 1970. Here is the link 2022 – THE THANKSGIVING TRADITION (squarespace.com)

Part II- The Last Supper by Billy Schott

The second part is an article written by Billy Schott about the last Aggie supper. Billy is not one to share short stories. His writing style adds optics and details that most writers miss. He has an excellent recollection of Longhorn football from 1962 through 2022, chronicling important moments in the history of Longhorn football. Starting as a boy shagging balls for DKR’s teams, followed by years as “Sure Schott” Longhorn football player, football official, and equipment manager for Coach Mackovic. Part III-

The third part is a work in process- incomplete- but good enough to publish for readers. Just know there will be more added to this section of the Longhorn and Aggie football games and traditions.

The historical road traveled by The Longhorn-Aggie game is deep-rooted in Longhorn sports history. You will read about Rats Watson and Icky Elam. The game played after the assassination of President Kennedy. Ricky Williams’s record-setting run. Bevo branding. The bonfire went wrong. A Longhorn grandfather who watched his Aggie grandson beat the Horns.

Finally, a perfect ending to the Aggie-Longhorn series was played in 2011. This game captures all the passions of 117 years of pent-up fan and player emotions into one final kick by Justin Tucker with no time remaining on the clock.
