In 1947 he walked-on to Coach Cherry’s freshman football team. He lettered as the starting fullback and he played in the 1949 Orange Bowl against to Georgia Tech and the 1950 Cotton Bowl against Tennessee. Alpha Epsilon Pi named him the national outstanding athlete. All four of his children swam for Texas. In 1998 he was inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame.
