I must say all who were involved did an extraordinary job! Thank you for reuniting so many Longhorns for such a great cause! Bill Schoening

I am often asked about my favorite athletes to cover through the years. When it comes to baseball there is no hesitation; it’s Brooks Kieschnick. For three years (in the early 90’s) it was a joy to describe his exploits on the mound AND at the plate. He was the two-time National College Player of the Year and led the Longhorns to two College World Series appearances. I’ve never seen a more intense player on the diamond. His #23 has been retired by the University, along with other standouts like Keith Moreland, Roger Clemens, and Greg Swindell. I enjoyed catching up with Brooks at the Texas Legacy Support Network golf outing earlier this week. Bill Schoening

And the Longhorn Legends golfing event begins

Robert Goodlett- Impressive turnout for the 1st Annual. Longhorns supporting Longhorns!!!

Thank you Billy Dale for inviting me out to the First Annual Texas Legends Golf Classic – starring Longhorns from every sport, every era, through decades of national championships. I was there not to play, but to support the Texas Legacy Support Network, whose stated mission is to preserve Texas sports history and assist former Longhorn athletes in need. What a gathering of longtime friends & childhood heroes ! But nobody on the course more inspirational or impressive than Tyres Dickson, a UT football player whose career was ended and life upended by a drunk driver, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down in 1998. Dickson and two-time national championship QB Donnie Wigginton toured the course by golf cart, and those big smiles could light up DKR in a burnt orange minute ! Congrats to you Billy and your all-star committee – the Best Is Yet To Come !! Photo below is Ken Capps and Honorary Captain Tyres Dickson.

Sports Journalist, author, publisher, and historian Mark McDonald was a guest of TLSN for the inaugural TLSN Legends golf tournament.

Mark McDonald says, It took 62 years and a charity fundraiser in Austin to do it, but I finally caught up with Donnie Wigginton, my old pee-wee quarterback from our undefeated Spring Branch pee-wee football team (Indians). In two seasons, we never lost a game. Then Donnie was recruited to an elite travel team called the Baby Oilers. At long last, we lost a game … in the post-season Peanut Bowl, 6-0, to a team from Temple Baptist Church. Donnie says I can blame the defeat on him, but as you can tell, I forgot all about that one 😂. The two guys in this photo remain huge, forever fans of Coach John Paul Young and his wife Dolores.

A heartfelt thank you from the TLSN Board to all of our Legends/Team Captains, Sponsors, Players, Patrons, Donors, Covert Cadillac, Amanda Carsey, and Great Hills Country Club for making our 1st Annual Legends Golf Tournament such a success. Your generosity and support enable us to fulfill our mission of helping those who proudly wore burnt orange—and their families—who now find themselves in need through no fault of their own. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of kindness and for sharing a day filled with camaraderie and celebration on the course supporting such a worthy cause! Looking forward to next year! Sherryl Hauglum Hook’em & Hugs to all who participated!!
