The Back Story of the the movie “My All-American” about Freddie Steinmark
The backstory of the movie “My All-American” has driven over 50,000 viewers to the TLSN website over the last 18 months. The most ever for TLSN in 9 years. While I was invited to many of the production events and have some knowledge of the movie’s production, Billy Schott and Tom Campbell have a much more significant role in the movie’s making. I hope each will share their stories on the TLSN Facebook page. My part in the production of the piece involved taking photos of the special events that preceded the movie’s opening. I have many, but I want to be able to show all because of the photo limit in one Facebook message to the base. Enjoy this trip to the past via the camera lens.

My All American was directed by Angelo Pizzo, who also wrote the screenplay. He’s best known for penning two other iconic sports films: Hoosiers and Rudy. This was actually Pizzo’s directorial debut, and he chose Steinmark’s story because of its emotional depth and inspirational legacy. He aimed to keep the film as historically accurate as possible—over 90% of it reflects real events

Bower Yousse is a close friend and former teammate of Freddie Steinmark, and he coauthored the authorized biography Freddie Steinmark: Faith, Family, Football alongside Thomas J. Cryan. The book offers a deeply personal and richly detailed account of Steinmark’s life, from his early days in Colorado to his courageous battle with cancer as a Texas Longhorn.
