Larry says:
I was returning home from a story one night driving northbound on I-35 when I was hit by a drunk driver.
I miraculously survived. Had a broken right femur, broken jaw, broken nose, broken face, broken ribs, AND a paralyzed vocal cord. Could only whisper (barely discernible in a QUIET room) for eight months…docs thought my voice would come back…it didn’t. Not a good omen for someone who dreamed of spending his life behind a microphone sharing my passion for collegiate sports.
So I was sent to the top doc at Cleveland Clinic. Success! Neck stitched up like Frankenstein and a very scratchy voice that was a miracle, though not loud.
I was cleared to work after 20 months. In 1981 I became UTSA’s first sports info director when they began with basketball, track, CC and tennis. Two years later, took job as editor/co-publisher of feature mag called Texas Hill Country View.
In 1984 with the help of close friend and tennis partner Kirk Bohls, I was offered a professorship that ended in retirement 35 years later.

Bill Elliott and the Fosbury Flop
|
Bill ignored old-school practices and past beliefs in high jumping techniques to set high standards for the Longhorns.
Elliott won the “head” game and transformed the sense of what’s possible in the high jump. He changed his mindset and removed mental roadblocks to master the Fosbury. Bill Elliott understood that the Fosbury required a discipline technique of building a jump one step at a time. He had to think out-side-the box to implement innovative processes, methods, and techniques to accomplish multiple tasks in new ways.

In 2023 TLSN would like to refocus on the oral history of those who have built the Longhorn Brand.
TLSN is more than just another podcast; it is a storytelling venue combining oral history, visuals, and text to celebrate Longhorn brand builders.
For example, John’s oral history is combined with text and photos in the link below.

“Most American athletes dream of being “All” something such as All-district, All-State, All-conference, or All-American. The word “ALL” confirms the skills, talent, and disciplines necessary to be recognized as a superior athlete.
But one of the most potent and significant confirmations of talent does not include the word “All.” It is “Olympic Champion”- an accolade officially recorded and honored for eternity as the best in the world for one moment in time.
Several Longhorns have reached the top of the pedestal as Olympic Champions. Brendan Hansen is one of them. But his story does not end with the gold medal; it begins there.
|
In January 2023, TLSN will combine text, photos, and oral history to capture Olympian and Longhorn brand builder Brendan Hansen’s story for posterity.
-
Brendan Hansen’s Competitive Career Features 24 All-American Selections And Three Olympic Appearances. He Is A Six-Time (Three Gold, One Silver, Two Bronze) Olympic Medalist and a Former World Record Holder In Both The 100-Meter And 200-Meter Breaststroke (Long Course).

Sponsors are needed to produce the Longhorn oral history segments for 2023. The cost per episode is $500. Choose to sponsor one episode or more- up to 10 episodes- to capture the history of Longhorn brand builders.
TLSN pays third-party contractor “Fresh Media” $500 to produce each episode. The finished product is then presented on the TLSN website under the umbrella of the sponsor’s name.
TLSN receives no compensation for the oral history segment, just a great memory saved for posterity.
Below is a link that will get you to all the oral history segments that are now part of the TLSN archives.
