The History of Longhorn Track, Field, and Cross Country is in the Que

I have spent the last 5 years chronicling the history of Longhorn sports. As I have shared with readers of the TLSN website many times, the content is free, educational, historical, and insightful.

Recently I talked via phone to Ivan Wagner. Ivan was/is a Longhorn brand builder who played two sports for the Horns. Basketball for Tom Penders and Rick Barnes and track for Coach Bubba Thornton. Ivan is a past Longhorn national champion in the high jump.

I then had an email conversation with the great Longhorn Richard Duncan . Richard is still one of a very few Longhorns who qualified for the NCAA outdoor national championship in three field events.

These conversations were followed by emails to and from LJ Cohen and Rey Moreno who offered guidance on how to better capture Longhorn track history. Each conversation reminded me that I was not doing a good job of sharing the whole panoramic vista of UT Sports. I am determined to do better .

So in this the 122nd TLSN newsletter spanning over 4 and 1/2 years , “Do better” is my new rally cry. At the top of the Que on the website is a celebration of track, field, and Cross Country. Putting together this montage has taken considerable time (not complaining), and it is still not close to completion , but it is view able. It is not possible to add all the history of Longhorn track in the Que because doing so reduces the loading speed for all viewers to a snails pace. If you want to see the whole history of Longhorn track, just use the search engine and type in “Track”.

Please remember that I am a layman not a professional writer or qualified graphic designer. I don’t have a support staff or proof readers. It is just me so forgive my errors. If you see a glaring error please email me at Williamdale@msn.com. All will be corrected in due course.

I am always looking for content and photos that reflect the past glory of the Texas Longhorns. If you so choose, please send information to the email address mentioned above.

Respectfully,

Billy Dale

Track, Field, and Cross Country are the only sports that fans can see the internal struggle of the athlete as the event unfolds.  The images below mirror that struggle that occurs 1000’s of times for UT  athletes as they write their story in the History of U.T. Track, Field, and Cross Country.

Patti Sue Plumer agrees saying “ Racing teaches us to challenge ourselves. It teaches us to push beyond where we thought we could go. It helps us to find out what we are made of. This is what we do. This is what it’s all about.” Photo is Sandy Blakeslee
