Lessons Learned and Lessons Taught

Larry Carlson is a consummate Longhorn sports historian whose articles reflect his memories of Texas football as a young boy who morphed into a sportscaster and writer during the Akers era. Larry survived a severe car accident in late ’79 that forever changed his career path, but destiny had a great plan for him. His friend Kirk Bohls helped him overcome his setback and find a related career. For 35 years, he taught Journalism as a Texas State professor and was able to also return to his passion for covering UT football.

Larry’s podcast is the 11th of 12 produced for TLSN (Texas Legacy Support Network) by Chris Doelle. 185,128 listeners tuned in to the first ten interviews, and that number will continue to grow. A podcast by football player Tyres Dickson will complete season one, and for season 2, TLSN is seeking an advertising partner.

Larry Carlson has also written two new articles for the TLSN website. One is titled “Cherry ???? Lemonade.” He starts the article by saying: “Unless you lived through the worst home loss in UT history, Longhorn fans likely don’t recall the name of Marty Cherry. The sophomore from the Arkansas side of Texarkana got a rough football baptism as a relief pitcher for the eleventh-ranked Horns on a hot mid-September day in 1997. A stunning 66-3 whipping from UCLA — to live in infamy as “Rout 66″ –.” While Marty Cherry played no worse than anyone else on this day of infamy, he at least learned a lesson that many men would have chosen if given a choice. Marty left football and became a Ralph Lauren model.

Larry’s other new article is titled “Fall Fashion Uniform preview.” Professor Carlson believes — as Coach Royal did — that uniforms are working clothes and should not include symbolic bells and whistles that focus on the package more than the product. The link to Larry’s article is :

In rowing- passion persuades time.

Rowing is the oldest intercollegiate sport in the United States. The first intercollegiate race was a contest between Yale and Harvard in 1852. According to the 2018–19 school year, there were 7,294 female collegiate rowers in Divisions I, II, and III in the NCAA. 

Lesson Learned by Longhorn rowers from Coach O’Neill.

“There is no magic technique or magic training regimen.”

Coach O’Neill says, “It’s hard day, after hard day. “Rowing is a beautiful sport to watch, but unfortunately, it is still not a well-attended spectator sport in Austin. There are no vast arenas full of loud crowds and passionate fans cheering for the team. Instead, rowers receive most of their motivation from their teammates and personal and internal passion. The soul’s desire will always burn brighter and longer than forces derived from arenas full of fans. 

Congratulations to Coach Dave O’Neill for continuing to build an excellent rowing program at Texas. He has done a great job of converting lessons taught into lessons learned, creating a winning formula.

ABE Lemons

The lessons learned by Abe Lemons during his coaching years created a humorous cynic.

1901 – 8-2-1 – Coach S.H. Thompson

First Thanksgiving A & M game Texas 32 A & M 0

The 1901 team played 5 games in 13 days, beating Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas A & M, but losing to Kirksville and Kansas. Thompson was a hard nose coach. Some thought he was a mad man.

The University of Texas Administration wanted to play the American School of Osteopathy in Missouri. Coach told UT decision-makers not to legitimize the Missouri team by playing them. He said the Missouri team used illegal recruiting techniques by selecting pick-ups from all over the country. UT administration did not listen. Texas lost 48-0.

76 years later, Abe Lemons is the head basketball coach at Texas, and illegal recruiting is still a major problem in collegiate sports.

Abe shared with anyone who would listen that many recruiters in the SWC choose to discard their moral compass and replace it with loaded dice.

He thought football recruiters were the best at using “creative” and illegal strategies to sign collegiate athletes. Cynic Abe made his point in a public statement.

“When they get to the bottom of this Watergate thing, bet your last dollar they’ll find a football coach.”

In sports history, the gene pool has produced some Longhorn legacy triplets and quadruplets

Some families are blessed with burnt orange genes that are passed down from generation to generation. In most cases, the gene involves three-generations, but at least one family has quadruplets.

TLSN has chronicled the story of 5 of these Longhorn sports families – Raymond Keller 1895, Ernie Koy Sr. the 1930s, Jack Collins Sr. 1930s. Stan Mauldin Sr. the 1940’s, and Charley Brewer in the 1950s.
