Track stare Ed Canada has passed away
I am so very sorry to let everyone know that “Big Hon” passed away in his sleep yesterday. I am brokenhearted. He was more than a teammate; he was my friend and “our” brother.- Walter Belt

Big Hon was one of a kind. I’m sorry I left before I got to run with him.
Please make sure to let me know when we lose other teammates. Sad as I’m still over here in Jacksonville and out of the main info. BH was never that big when I last saw him in Dallas, but he was headed in that direction. Like me, BH kept coming back and finally got to compete and complete his varsity career. I never heard how he finished in the open quarter as I was overseas at the time he ran. I came back to finish up in December of 1970. BH and Zerkey (sp) finished my first semester back.
Craig didn’t know then that he had little time left—sad. Thanks for the info.

Just spent a few minutes browsing Eddie’s Facebook site covering his artwork. In every photo he had a wonderful smile shared with his friends. He was a fortunate man…loving life up to his end. We could all pray for such good fortune
Thanks for reaching out,
Preston

Dear David Matina, using your last name only because there’s so many David’s; I’m so sorry to hear of Eddie Canada‘s passing. I know you and he were close, and kept in touch.
Not only was he a huge talent on the track, he was a really good guy. He lived a tough life after Track, but I think he found peace and happiness in his marriage. He also turned to art, which must’ve been very satisfying him to express his feelings in paint since he was retired from work.
He came to many of our reunions, starting even in 2005 when I organized a small reunion. We met in a parking lot south of the old stadium, over which now the football complex exists. Bill Elliott, Bob O’Brien, and James Means were among those of about seven attending.
One of the curious things at the time to me was the Track reunion of 70-year-olds going on beside us. There were about 12 to 15 guys.
I thought wow it’s curious that those old guys are so many and so happy to get together.
Now, we’re those old guys.
Well, while this is a digression, it is a reminder that some of the best friends we ever have had are from Track, and that it would be great if we would continue to get together at every opportunity.
Can you believe that some of us are even over 80 years old!
I didn’t know Eddie really well, like you did David. I remember studying with him for finals in the academic center. I remember what a talent he was on the track. Personally, only one time, in practice coach had us run a 500. I got paired with Eddie and tried my best to beat him I while I think Eddie was just running at a jog for him.
For the guys who knew him and care, there is usually a memorial page after someone passes where you can leave comments.
I hope you guys will leave a whole team of comments for Eddie’s wife and family.
Best wishes to all, and plan to get together for the Texas Relays in 2025.
