Montage of 2019 reunion of 1969 team, the Kamrath’s, and Coach Elliott

Recently there was a penetrating and revealing article in the Alcalde magazine written by Chris O’Connell about volleyball Coach Elliott. The article shared some of the internal struggles and disappointments that he has experienced as Head Coach of the Longhorn volleyball empire. His comments in Alcalde are symptomatic of what happens to Longhorns Coaches when they win too much. Coach Pat Weis, Coach Harvey Penick, and Coach Royal understand Coach Elliott’s dilemma and offer him a resolution learned from their experience.



The key to enjoying the journey as a coach is preparing the team to give luck a chance. Do not gauge success by winning a once in a lifetime national championship. Instead, measure success by giving a team a lifetime of chances to win the national championship. Coach Elliott has accomplished that goal. On October 18, 2019, driving from Houston to Austin, Bill Atessis was interviewed by Tim Taylor, a Longhorn graduate who has a thriving Facebook Longhorn sports website. Bill’s comments during the interview are in the Que and act as the backdrop for a montage created for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 1969 National Championship Longhorn football team. Enjoy Bill’s comments juxtaposed next to eight late 1960’s related videos and new and old photos of members of the 1969 team.
